Mangroves

ive had red mangroves forever, outside in a pot and in my aquarium, they dont really need anything special and are slow growers, in the aquarium the only requirement is that the top of the propagule be above the water, hope this helps

Mine started as pods. I believe the bottom of the pod or the roots should be in a rubble pile or in some type of substrate. The top of the pod part needs to be kept out of the water. As said above, they are slow growers. Mine took weeks before I even saw a root or a leaf. Now, I've got plenty of roots and leaves and just cut the leaves as needed. Since they're slow growers, I usually cut half of my 8 at a time. Mine are in my refuge.

forgot to mention the red mangrove leaves will tint ur water like tea so make sure they dont decompose in the aquarium

Mine are in my fuge also and doing well, growing slowly also. I was told to mist the tops to keep them from drying out, which I do once a day.

ive had the opposite experience as my mangrove pods grew really fast. i guess fast is relative but mine kept growing to the point where the leaves got too high up and ended up "burning" them as they got too close to my fuge light and the roots grew out and crowded my fuge. i sprayed the leaves daily as well.

do u know what kind of mangrove u have? ive heard the white mangrove grows really fast

You also should clean the leaves from the salt spray/creep every day or so, or else the salt builds up.

Mine are red. I know you're supposed to spray the leaves, but I'm lazy about that. I will occationaly wash the leaves with the tank water, butmostly leave them alone. They seam to do fine. Mine also grow right up to and past the light. The leaves that get too close to the light also get burnt.

Mangroves grow to ten or twelve feet tall, don't remove a lot of nutrients and need a special setup to survive/thrive. I have access to unlimited mangrove pods in SW Florida and after trying many setups will no longer use mangroves in my reef tanks.

fwiw,
