Do some searching of old threads, seems like I remember reading of a couple people's mantis that did jump. I think it depends on the species of mantis you have.
I decided not to chance it so i went and had an acrylic top cut for me today. Took me way to long to aquire my mantis to loose him because i didnt have a 5 dollar top on the tank Thanks for the replys everyone.
Late to the party here, but I have mine in an open-top nano (10g). Before his tank was ready I had him in an isolation/breeder box at the top of my reef. He can swim to the top, but he never did try to climb or jump... /shrug
I've kept mantis in tanks with eggcrate as a lid.. and open top for short times.. but it's best to keep it covered, its not really about the mantis getting out.. It's what might get IN.
