Does any one want a Mantis shrimp? We have started up a second tank and we got some new rock and this little guy is in a hole in one of our rocks and we do not want it to eat our other fish. . . it is a very neat little hitchiker. . . . We want it to go to a good home.

We may want it...do you think you can put 2 mantis shrimp together? I know Thor (one of the guys on here) does it...

hey keithandtracey, you wouldnt be able to keep monti and one together in the tank he is currently in. It would have to be in the 50 plus gallon tank so they have less of a chance to run into one another. They will kill one another, well one will eat the other. just thought i would let you know

Just start a little 2.5 gal(10 gal tanks are actually cheaper if you like bigger) for him. That's the way to do it...

yeah thats what my mantis is in. A 10 gallon setup i bought at walmart for 20 bucks for the light, tank and HOB filter.

Brian, I thought you had more than one in a tank??? Craig, I think you should take him...you love those guys too!! And I KNOW you have a tank for it already...lol...remember we've been to your place...haha

I did have them in the same tank, but I had a seperator between the two of them. It was clear so you couldnt see it.

I only need another if it is a spearer. I have my little smasher already and he is the only one I want. I didn't realize how true it is that a 2.5G is a crap-load of work until I got one.

I'm not sure which kind it is. . . It has not come all the way out of the rock yet. . It is striped . . it has 2 little eyes that kind of resemble a lobster and a tail that resembles a lobsters tail and a fairly long white and red striped body and the hands look alot like a praying mantis's I don't know if it is much help. . and I don't really know enough about them to tell you the diffrences he is an awesome little guy and I hate to give him up but I was reading up and I don't want him to kill my fish( I have him in a 50g with 3 damsels.

he wont kill the fish, i have one in a ten gallon with three damels and he is about 6 inche long and could have their way with them. What kind of rock did he come in on? fiji, carribean?

Fiji. . . . They eat fish though right? thats what we have read and he hasn't even come out of his hole for about a week so I don't know what he is eating but all the fish are still in the tank. I put some formula two by his hole so if he wanted somthing I was hoping he would eat that ( But then I thought it was kind of a stupid move because the fish might try and eat it and thats kind of like baiting a hook) so I don't know I just want what is right for the mantis and the fish? ? ? He lives in a nice size rock 3 or 4 lbs

Someone correct me if i'm wrong but if you feed him pieces of shrimp or somthing like that, he may not want to go after the fish. In our mantis tank we don't have fish but we do have snails. I've seen the snails hang out right in front of Monty (the mantis) and he not do anything. I assume that's because we keep him well fed...he's spoiled...lol...Anyway, someone chime in if I'm mistaken. I'd hate to have anything happen to your fish. :(

your right, if they are spot feed odds are they wont eat the fish. Putting food there is a good idea. Hey craig it isnt a carribean rock, it might be a spearer. You should check it out. But yes keep putting food there and you shouldnt have a worry about him eating your fish. Make sure and feed him.
