Good morning! I was looking into a smasher type mantis this morning and I was wondering if I need to get him a acrylic aquarium or can I use the glass aquarium that I already have? I have always read that I do need acrylic but I wasn't sure? Also can I keep display fish with him? I have a setup with a 40 breeder glass so I would try to get the same dimensions in acrylic.

I think acrylic is needed. And no fish. But I've never had one.

however I know alittle about them,I did have one I purchased for 3 bucks from a store that wanted to get rid of it.I had it 4 years in a 60 gallon glass aquarium with a yellow tang and a Niger trigger.He ate goldfish.He lived under a piece of coral in the very centre of the aquarium.It molted periodically
Actually when it died I initially thought it was just its left overs from a molt...but sadly it was dead after being a good Mantis shrimp in that environment.I have heard that they are difficult .My index finger had been attacked several times .It didn't really hurt.It was a series of fast beats like a drummer doing a series of drum rolls on a snare drum.That was however how it killed feeder fish.It is probably recommended to house it by itself because they eat fish.My fish were okay.Also it was fed goldfish but that was in 1987.I did not have any idea what it was or what it was capable of.It had really nice red eyeballs that moved independant of each other.For 3 dollars it was a good deal.The store was happy because it had eaten some livestock...grouper fish.
