I was directed to this part of the forum by several people, so that maybe I could get some help or advice on a mantis shrimp which made its way into my freshly started 55 gallon reef tank on a piece live rock from a LFS.

Here's the thread that I started shortly aftee I found the bad boy.

My questions are :
Will he be okay in my refugium?
What are his special needs?

Ideally I would have liked to keep him in my big 55 gallon tank, but he seems too aggressive . ( he literaly chased a piece of raw shrimp around the tank as I was trying to feed a open brain corral.

Thanks everyone for any help you may have.

Mantis shrimp are aggressive predators and are well known to cause the disappearence of fish. You can just feed it the krill every day to every few days and that should be good, you can also supplement it with crawfish, crabs, clams, or anything hard for it to hit on as they may lose their claws from not fed something hard every once in a while.. It will be fine in the refugium but as said they are natural predators and will kill tankmates.

Be sure to turn your volume up http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ntUsZxrpYug. Also avoid sticking fingers in the tank it's in as they litterally are nicknamed thumbsplitters for good reason. They also need rocks and sand for burrowing or a peice of black PVC pipe. Do you have any pics of your mantis as some get bigger than others. Larger ones in rare cases such as peacock can break glass tanks.

+1 for Calappidae. I agree with him. You should put him separated from the other fish. My boy is very easy to take care in 20gal AGA tank .I feed him with Raw seafood from market , or clam with shell -> sit down -> watch action movie. He remodel his house every day. Sometime i hand feeding, really scary moments =))
