Our March speaker is Drew Weiner, Director of Reef Protection International. Robert Ordway had the opportunity to have lunch with Drew a few months ago while he was in San Francisco. Robert really liked the RPI message and recomended Drew as a future meeting speaker.

Two projects that Drew and RPI are involvd with are the Reef Fish Guide (Link) and the associated Reef Fish Guide survery. Please take the opportunity to go and read through thr guide, and answer the survey. A few weeks ago Drew was pleased to announce that Tropical Fish Hobbyist (TFH) magazine is taking part in the pilot test of the Reef Fish Guide. There is an article and FULL-PAGE spread of the Guide in the March 2006 issue. TFH has been the leading aquarium magazine for over half a century and enjoys readership of over 45,000 subscribers.

So before our meeting, please take a few minutes to check out the RPI site, their Reef Fish Guide, and to also take part in their survey.

Drews topic will be RPI, their Reef Fish Guide...and if we have a few spare minutes maybe we could get him to talk about his work in the Galapagos.

Here is Drews Bio;
Drew Weiner is Director of Reef Protection International. Reef Protection International educates the public about the marine aquarium trade and promotes consumer behavior that enhances coral reef conservation. The staff and Board of Advisors of RPI bring a wide range of experience to this project coming from:

ââ"šÂ¬Ã‚¢ The marine conservation community, including those involved in market-based conservation efforts;
ââ"šÂ¬Ã‚¢ Authors of acclaimed reef keeping books;
ââ"šÂ¬Ã‚¢ Advanced aquarists who are helping to advance techniques for captive breeding and coral propagation efforts;
ââ"šÂ¬Ã‚¢ The public aquarium community;
ââ"šÂ¬Ã‚¢ The ornamental aquaculture industry.
RPI's unique approach to coral reef conservation employs:
ââ"šÂ¬Ã‚¢ Outreach and education activities designed to lessen consumer demand for threatened wild species and promote the use of captive-bred marine aquarium animals as a viable substitute;
ââ"šÂ¬Ã‚¢ Creation of partnerships within the marine aquarium trade, public aquariums and research institutions to develop and promote captive breeding and other more sustainable programs that will displace demand for threatened wild species;
ââ"šÂ¬Ã‚¢ Utilization of knowledge to influence consumer awareness and purchasing behavior.
By focusing on the marine aquarium trade, RPIââ"šÂ¬Ã¢"žÂ¢s efforts intentionally compliment the activities of other organizations to ensure that the combined strategy of the coral reef conservation community is comprehensive and effective. Reef Protection International (RPI) was formed in early 2004 and became a project of Earth Island Institute, our fiscal sponsor, in May, 2004.
