Marineland Power Filters

Hey Reefers,

Posting this in this forum because it specifically relates to the product. I know that the penguin and emporer filters with bio-wheels are awesome for freshwater, the question is, how are they for saltwater FO or FOWLR tanks? Also, where can I learn about filtration types? I want to know what types are good for specific types of set up's. I know next to nothing about canister filters, wet/dry filters, etc... I am familiar only with power filters. Thanks in advance.

HEY!
the best thing to do is surf around the different specialized forums and see what people in that part of the hobby are doing for filtration.

I have used the penguin and emperor for smaller (under 100 gal)FO, FOWLR, and with a removed biowheel for reef and they get my seal of approval.
the trick is will it work with your animal....

at my last job we had a 3ft bumblebee grouper... well 20 emperor 400s wouldn't have handled the mess when that thing would defecate in a 180 bow, biologically maybe, but would never have cleared the water. he only had 180gals of space but there was 3200gals of water behind it...
My point?
filtration really needs to be tuned the the SPECIFIC application not simply generalized for "FO" for "Reef"

Thanks Swims withthe fishes,

Though when I tried to do several searches at various times throughout the day I got a server overload messege. The filtration, lighting, etc... forum seems to be 98 dedicated to lighting only. Well, I went off of your advice, and took a leap today. While browsing for more LR at my LFS, I spotted a baby hippo tang that I knew my daughter would go nuts over. Of course I will care for it, and smile as she watches "Dory" graze the LR. I am planning on also purchasing an achillies tang, a blue girdled angel, and a few select others for a 300 gallon.
