Maroon Clownfish pair

Hoping I can get a few answers here ..I bought a mated pair of maroon /gold clownfish from this guy and he said that they laid eggs every spring on this rock that I also got from him. I have no experience with fish breeding or raising fry I was really curious about the way they are in the tank. For one thing the are constanly stirring the sand bed and moving my rocks and coral frags knocking them of ..and when I put my hand in the tank to put things back I am like their target or something ..They dont hurt but hit pretty hard at times and scare the crap out of me..Ive read they are territorial but are they worst when it is time to spawn? What are the signs that they are and should I remove them from my 140 gal tank and put them in my 30 gal all to themselves...I appreciate any answers ..Kim

Every spring?!?! Think he was blowing smoke up your... They should have been laying eggs every 2 weeks, +/-.

Them moving rocks, sandbed stirring, etc is normal for maroons -- just wait until they draw blood, then you can say that you are a clownfish keeper. ;)

If they were getting ready to spawn, you would see them cleaning off a spot on the rocks.

Well I quess the old saying you dont bite the hand that feeds you doesnt apply to clowns then ..thanks for the advice.

Todd is spot on. My GSM pair spawn average every 17 days.

Male is the worker and does "most" of the cleaning. Female kicks sand up everyday. I've learned to keep coral away from there side of the tank, easy to do with 5-10 BTA on average.

My female always attacks my hand. Spawning "period" or not. Its actually when the deed is going down, that she will not attack. I've learned to keep my hands out of the tank when spawning, not to interrupt the party.

My gsm lay every 8 to 10 days and the hatch is the 6th night.
My female rushes to the front glass and flares out for me. Reminds me of a bearded dragon before it attacks.
She isn't the only one to attack me, but was the first to draw blood. She is pushing 6".

I would suggest that a laying pair of gsm is not the best pair of clowns to get. Hehe
The previous owner should have warned you of their aggressiveness, especially when spawning.

I have a 140 gal tank but have 3 tangs and a couple of damsels in it . Wondering if I should get a breeder tank and put the pair in there? Would I be taking on too big of a job. ?

I guess that would be for your preference only. Do you want to attempt to keep the fry?

If so, that's a lot of work.

Otherwise I doubt the tank or tankmates will stop them once they are comfortable. Mine have been housed with a few different tankmates over the years. Currently with a large Lion and Wrasse. They keep clicking away. However they do have a garden of BTA's to keep them comfy.
