Maroon Clowns - Mating

Big Al's near me just got a nice shipment of Maroon clowns in.

How hard are they to mate. I thought I read somewhere that if you put them in the same tank they will kill each other before they mate. They are not cheap selling for $30.00/each and I would hate for any of them to die trying. They are all pretty small (1 inch). They are all in seperate tanks. In one of the tanks they had a 2 1/2" on. Is the likelyhood of a match greater with a bigger one with a smaller one or two small one together.

I think there is a sticky in the clownfish forum about pairing maroon clowns. They do tend to fight until death if they are the same size, so it is typically better if you get one significantly smaller than the other. This way the small one is more likely to submit to the larger rather than the two fighting over dominance until one is dead
 
I paired the two maroons I have. I put the female in the tank first and let her designate her territory. I fed her until she is about the size of my wife's hand. I then purchased a small juvenile. He is about 2 or 2 1/2 inches long. I put him in the sump to get use to the tank water and my feeding. After a couple of weeks I dropped him in the main tank with the female. It was funny. He went to the anemone she liked best. She went back to the anemone, found him there and it must have been love at first sight. They never fought and almost instantly bonded. I think the secret is two things. First and most important, the female must be so much bigger than the male that even he knows who's boss. Second, the female should be so lonely that she will show some manners when a male comes a callen'

Just curious when you did this and if you have any eggs yet.

I just managed to get a pair of marron clowns for $45.00. I have not yet picked them up. Sellar says they are 2-3 inches long and about 3 years old.

Any suggestions on how to get them to spawn in a new aquarium.

I got a pair of Maroons for 89.99 at THAT FISH PLACE. Amazing pair except the female wont eat when I'm around. All they do is host. I have no clue about the age.
 
i bought one maroon at2" and one at 1/2" and after about 18months they spawn regularly every 10-14 days ,triggers to spawning for me have been an increase in lighting duration and intensity,and an increase in food -feed until there full,im having a few dramas raising the larvae as their very aggressive to each other but i'll keep trying different things,good luck with yours:thumbsup:
 
I got them tonight. They are now in their new home. They did not eat what I put in the tank they are probably a little startled. I will give them some time. Hopefully I can get some pics of them soon.
 
That's what I did. They didn't seem interested.

Last night they ate my homemade food like pigs.
