Matching return pump for eshopps of 1000

Well guys not new to this hobby at all. Just new to non drilled tanks. That being said I broke down my 125 reef ready and opted for converting 50 to a reef tank.

That being said my pf 1000 says its rated for 1000 gph. However I hooked up one of my old return pumps off the 125, rated at 1000 gph, and I swear to god I thought my hard plumbed pvc was going to shake apart also. My tank about oveflowed in a matter of seconds, so clearly this overflow can't handle 1000 gph.

I was thinking of getting a mag 5 or 7? Any recommendations on accurate gph matchedpumps for this setup???

I would just add a gate valve on the discharge side of your return pump and slow down the flow. That said it sounds more like a plumbing issue than the pump being oversized to me. How did you run the drains and what size pipe?

Yea, throttle back on the return. I have the 800, no way it does the GPH it says, and really I think its the U-tube. I'm tempted to throw a second one in mine to see if it can handle more.
