Mated pair of CBS shrimp....

Krazy

In Memoriam
I bought a mated pair of CBS shrimp the other day from an online source... I acclimated them and added... Not but 20-30 seconds and the one shrimp took the claws off the other shrimp ? The guy I bought them from says its normal and they will kiss and make it, Since then they both pair up all over and wander away from each other a little. but seem happy otherwise... Is this really normal? and my 2nd question is how long will it take for the 2nd shrimp to re-grow its main claws ???

:)

if you can see a greenish mass inside the back, behind the head of one and not the other then it is a male and female. but not guaranteed to be a mated pair. wait and find out. my females right claw dissapeared a couple of days ago, but it should regrow after a molt or two. i'll find out soon. she's due to molt within a week or two. the cb seems to molt 3-4 times more often than my lysmata.

Interesting... and if they are not male/female. I assume, one will kill the other ?

thanks for the reply ...

Well like i said above, they've been in the tank 3 days now, but day 1 as soon as they hit the sand, the one took both claws right off the other and they havent fought since... they stay within 4 inchs of each other and get pretty close at times without a fight. they are in the back now so I cant look for the green mass behind the head you mentioned... I hope they get along, I'll be ****ed if one kills the other, lol

since i replie to this my cb has moltes twice. first there was a 3/4 inch stalk for a claw. now it molted last night and has a claw. it's just over half full size so i think one more molt should bring it back to full size.

I noticed what you said above at the LFS yesterday, 1 cbs they had in one tank did not have the green mass behind the head, and another 1 they had in a seperate tank did have the green mass behind the head... However neither of mine do... I think I may take them out later and trade em both in for a cleaner shrimp or a fire shrimp...

Will these CBS go after a fish ?

cb don't actively hunt fish but most fish get used to staying out of their way. they do sometimes lunge at my fish if they get too close. the cleaner shrimp also stays out of its way but so far no attacks.

I brought the mated pair to my LFS today.. They actually were a mated pair, the female was the one that still had its claws and the male was declawd... the female had a FULL belly of eggs.. pretty cool stuff.. anyways I traded the pair for a FIRE shrimp.. hehe

I'm gonna order a MATED pair of cleaner shrimps now... I think they look better and will be alot cooler !

The female gets that green mass prior to spawning (it's the ovaries), but after they spawn the green egg mass is under the tail until the hatch, after which time the ovaries slowly begin to develop more eggs.

Thats a quote from the seller of my mated pair...

Makes sense now to me Jeffery !!!!
