maxijet impellar question

I have a maxijet 1200 that's kinda rattles. So, I switched the impellar with an other maxijet 1200 and it's fine. The noisy impeller looks fine to me, but I don't know what I should be looking for. Yes it's clean. Any clue? Also, I have a maxijet 900 impeller laying around. Are they the same?

I've experienced two common problems with MJ impellers. First, the magnet assembly doesn't spin or doesn't spin freely around the central axis. This is usually caused by CaCO3 buildup that can be removed by a vinegar soak. Second, the plastic portion of the impeller looses a fin or a partial fin. The later results in a very loud rattle. The former doesn't cause any noise. Based upon your symptoms, I'd suspect a damaged plastic propeller.

Do you have it running 24/7 or is it on a timer of any kind? Every once in awhile they just don't seem to work. The company you bought it from is probably aware of this and might send you another one...

Oh, and I did notice that mine did the same thing for awhile. I figured out that my return was blowing water behind it and it caused the propeller to shoot out and rattle. As soon as I eliminated the current from behind it the rattling stopped.

The pump was in the closet for a yr. I just pulled it out to test it as I need it now. So, no, it's not on a timer. I tested it in a bucket. So, it has nothing to do with current from other sources. The impeller has all it's fins and I can not see any buildup at all, and I have 20/20 vision. I wondre if there's build up on the inside diameter of the magnet (where the central axis goes through). I'll try to give it another soaking. Just so I know, will putting a mj900 impeller into an mj1200 body give me the same GPH?

I ran it for a couple days in vinegar & it still rattles. I can't figure it out. So no one knows if putting a mj900 impeller into an mj1200 body give me the same GPH?

So I decided to start switching parts off of the good MJ1200 impeller assembily with the MJ1200 that rattles. It kept rattling untill I switched the magnet. For some reason the magnet is not spinning smoothly on the shaft. There's nothing on the shaft itself. So, it's gotta be something on the inside diameter of the magnet (where the central axis goes through). I'm wondering if I can set it in a drill press and boar it out a bit? Any help guys?

if the spindle goes through the middle of the magnet, boring it out won't work as the increase in space can allow the magnet to spin off center. is the spindle bent in any way?
i'm not sure about the maxijet, but most manufacturers use 1 type of impeller for several diffrent models. They just increase the number of coils in the housing to increase the flow or speed of the impeller. ie the 900 impeller should be the same as the 1200.
Just as a thought, is the cap on the end of the spindle intact? Is there any damage to the hole in which the spindle locates?

The spindle is fine. I took the magnet from a good mj1200 on to the spindle of the rattling mj & it was fine. I then took the magnet from the bad mj & put it on the spindle of the good mj & it rattled. It has to be the magnet that's bad. It's just that I have never heard of a magnet going bad.

Now that I think of it, I don't remember if I switched these out

OK, it is now confirmed. It is the magnet. I switched the caps and it still rattled. Oh, well it still works. I'll just use it for mixing water or something.

You can purchase a new impeller assembly .. as I recall they don't cost much. You might also consider contacting the mft and discussing the issue .. they may send you a new impeller assembly free of charge.

Yeah, for like $10+shipping. I could buy the entire pump used for that price.

Sorry I didn't read your post all the way through and didn't see the part about contacting the manufacturer. I'll do that as soon as I can find some contact info. You would'nt happen to have it?
