maxima spawn

I know that most of the tridacna clams available to aquarists are farmed. I have heard alot on rc about spawning clams causing problems in tanks. I have a few maximas and I was wondering if there is anyway to intice them to spawn and transfer the larvae into a seperate aquarium for raising without harming the clams or the water quality of the tank.

easily, no.

inducing them to spawn is easy. but you may have to sacrifice the clams

collecting the gametes is easy.

knowing what clam is spawning eggs and what one sperm, hard.

mixing the two(sperm and eggs) in the right concentration very hard.

setting up a tank to keep the larva in suspension, alive and still maintain good water quality, hard.

heres how the clam farms do it

Great link. Thanks. It says you can use a "heat stress method" that doesn't harm the animal. Maybe I'll try that.

that depends on your definition of "hurt" :)

what there are doing is stressing the clam to the point that it thinks the end of the world is comming so it spawns to try to save the race.

before you do any of this i would try to make sure you have fully sexually mature clams otherwise all you are going to get is sperm.

also the sperm to egg ratio isn't even close to 50%, 50%. you need maybe a shot glass of sperm to a gal or 2 of eggs

depends on the species. I acnt eraffirm what was said earlier. captive raising clams is not a reasonable goal for most aquarists. spawning clams, while easy, is also risky, and you do have to stress them to do so. I would rather the animals not be stressed, and live a long life.

Its not even that much. Its a couple of ml per gallon.
