Maxspect Gyre Revelation

I am a minimalist when it comes to the hobby but am pretty happy with my budget friendly setup. I don't have high end equipment, don't keep up with the latest technology, and what I do own is mostly used equipment purchased off of fellow reefcentral frequenters.

The same went for my powerheads. I had jebao knockoffs that were fairly powerfuly (3600gph I think) that were placed opposite sides of my 125 gallon display and alternated operating by a controller. I also had a koralia on the back wall, as well as my return operating nonstop.

I had been running that way for probably 5 years. Most all of my mixed reef inhabitants were happy for the most part. Corals have great color, but they grow slow in my tank (pry because I don't add anything other than my 1x month water changes) and fish for the most part seemed happy.

Well, I did my normal thing and purchased a used Maxspect Gyre 150 (thank your superchargeme - Paul) last weekend. This thing has rocked my tanks world. It is on alternating Gyre mode 50% forward, 70% reverse for 5 minutes. All I can say is wow. My fish are loving it. My blue tang which had lived in a hole for the last couple of years and came out for feeding is now out 100% and all fish are frolicking in the flow. My coral is adjusting well for the most part. SPS seem like extension is better. LPS are ok, need to do some moving around. A couple chalices look a little annoyed too but I think I can correct that with some new placement. Im hoping with corrections and flow pattern I see some quicker growth.

A lot of words there but thought I would share a positive review on the Maxspect products. Next time I upgrade it will be with the newer version. Knowing me I will have this one for awhile though!

I run two gyre 250s. Traded in the Mp10s and 40's two months ago. I liked the ecotechs, but feel I'm getting better coverage and more bang for the buck with the gyres. Thanks for sharing your story.

Just a heads up, but I saw the other day that IceCap has licensed the Gyre technology from Maxpect and is offering similar units brand new for about $150. No idea on reviews of them or anything, but nice to know that there is an even more affordable alternative.
