May MTRC Meeting

The next MTRC meeting will be held at my house on May 17th at 3:00 p.m.. My address is:

We are going to do something a little different at this meeting with the hopes of stimulating more frag trading. To do this, we are going to have a mini FRAG SWAP. This is how I hope it will work. Everyone that can, people new to the hobby are exempt from this, needs to bring 3 frags to the meeting. Two of these frags must be traded. The third frag will be used as a raffle prize for those new to the hobby who are unable to bring frags to the meeting. We are not going to aren’t going to make any hard set rules as to who is “new to the hobby” and shouldn’t bring frags and who should. Just use your own judgment as to which class you fall into. Of course, you can also bring additional frags to trade or sell if you would like. But if you bring frags to sell, you should also have the three frags for the trading/raffle. All frags should be prebagged bagged because my wife would kill me if we started setting up extra tanks in the house.

Please post here if you have any questions/comments about the process. Also, post if you plan on coming and what you plan on bringing (post pics if you have them available).

Yes -- the ground rules are:

Newbies: (you get to decide if you fit in this category or not) need to just show up

Others: 3-frags = admission. 2 to trade, and 1 for a raffle. All newbies will be in the raffle for the available frags.

Feel free to post pics to this thread of what you will be bringing. This experiment will only be as good as we all try to make it -- so lets make this fun and get some nice frags going

My advice is that we set a sort of "price point" for the frags. AKA, make a general rule to live by as far as the going price for the frags so trading is without drama. It will prevent people from bringing a frag and saying, "My frag is worth more than your frag, so I'm not trading with you, nanny nanny boo boo..." type of thing. If we say $10-15 worth of coral, that helps people judge how big of a piece to frag. If it's a cheaper coral, try to frag a little bit bigger of a piece. If it's an uber expensive coral, it doesn't have to be huge. I think it could help prevent some issues... Just my two cents of course...

I think that sounds pretty reasonable, Moriah. How about: Bring as great a stuff as you like but expect things to be around $15-type frags. That way you can bring some more $ stuff if you want, but will be doing that more to give than receive

How should we do the trading? Should it be like a secret santa type thing where we pull names out of a hat and trade one frag between them with each person's name in the hat twice? Just thinking...

I think you fit into the new reefer category and don't need to bring anything except yourself. Only newbies will be entered into the raffle, and so you are guaranteed to go home with something

If only a few newbies show up, they may go home with a lot! Which is all the better.

I say we just let people trade on here perhaps and then also maybe do a chinese auction at the meeting if people want to participate.

the problem with a grab bag situation is that some frags might be sps or lps and others may not have the lighting for such frags..anyways some type of game might be fun though

The game is, I make a giant stocking, you put on a blindfold, we spin you around, and you try to find the stocking to put your frags in (think pin the tail on the donkey). Once full, I drag the stocking to the car to bring it home.

I shall call it "Brian's 270 Gallon Stocking Game" :lol:

Good point, CJ. I don't think people with good enough lighting would have a problem trading things around as needed, though.

Personally I'm not really out for anything in particular... and I think this swap will be fun for sure!

Brandon- Yup... I'm figuring on that in addition to the other frags I'll bring. Since I'll have to bring other frags, I'm also figuring that the odds of me remembering to bring it to the meeting are pretty good.

And I thought everyone in the club had some of that bird's nest by now...

I think the trade in this thread before hand thing is a good idea. We can always play it by ear at the meeting as well if need be.

Ok, guys... I've got one trade down. One or more to go.

I've got some purple deaths that are ready to frag if someone would like one.

I've also got a ORA German Blue monti, some nuclear greens, pulsing xenia, green leather, green rhodactis mushrooms, yellow polyps, and I think thats about it. I've got some pics I'll try to post of a few of these. Let me know if you'd like pics of any specific one.
