Mechanical filter?

What do you use for mechanical filters on your breeding system?

I am using the blue filter stuff in a basket before the bioballs, because it is cheap, but it is not that cheap, and I wonder if there is something better.

Yes, socks :D I have at least 20 of those things, but not like the one in the link. I prefer the ones with a strap type hanger. Anyway I have 5-6 places in the system where I use them, anywhere there is a downspout basically. I wash them in Mrs M's washer ( she is NOT thrilled). Run one cycle with heavy bleach (no soap) then a second cycle just as a rinse. They last for years.

I personally dont wear knee-highs, but ive been told you change them every day :D

I change my filter socks depending on how fast they get nasty, lately i swap mine out every 10 days or so. at one time it was every 3 days or so.

Right, I have it on good authority that Richard prefers pantyhose

As for filter socks, you can wait until they load up and overflow, but that is probably not the best idea ;) Just remember that all mechanical filtration does is sweep the dirt under the rug, it's still in contact with the water, breaking down and degrading water quality. If you changed them 5X a day it wouldn't be too much. I change mine as often as I can make myself do it, usually once a week.

Hmmm, I was sure that by now Kathy would suggest this might be another use for knee-highs

Hey, whatever works!
