Mechanical filter?

Yes, socks 
I have at least 20 of those things, but not like the one in the link. I prefer the ones with a strap type hanger. Anyway I have 5-6 places in the system where I use them, anywhere there is a downspout basically. I wash them in Mrs M's washer ( she is NOT thrilled). Run one cycle with heavy bleach (no soap) then a second cycle just as a rinse. They last for years.

Right, I have it on good authority that Richard prefers pantyhose 
As for filter socks, you can wait until they load up and overflow, but that is probably not the best idea
Just remember that all mechanical filtration does is sweep the dirt under the rug, it's still in contact with the water, breaking down and degrading water quality. If you changed them 5X a day it wouldn't be too much. I change mine as often as I can make myself do it, usually once a week.
