MH Ballast placement recommendation needed

Is there any drawback in placing ie screwing in MH ballasts behind the canopy so that they are not in the stand or behind it?

If so what the best or most common placement recommendation. I know it has to have good air circulation for heat purposes I am most concerned with water splashes and avoiding a mess of wires. I have icecaps

I keep my ballast for a 250 watt SE in the stand and run the plug up to the fixture. It doesn't really get that hot, I use a Galaxy e-ballast from Sunlight Supply.
