Hi guys,
Im currently setting up a nano tank. The inhabitants are a pair of harlequin shrimp and i'm going to keep zoos, ricordeas and mushrooms. There will be nothing else. Im using the JBJ Picotope tank which has a volume of 3 gallon and a water level height of 7". I do want the best for the growth of the corals and thinking of using a 70w MH lighting fixture for it. My choices are the Aquamedic with 20k bulb, the JBJ Viper or the retrofit kit from illuming.com. I will be hanging it ard 8-10" above the water level.
Now my question is, will it be too much light for the corals and the shrimps? Please advise. Thanks.

I run 20k 70w mh on my 2.7 and it is doing great.

I would stick with a PC bulb for the livestoke you have. None need that much light and the shrimp don't need it for sure.

If you have an overhang in the aqua scaping it should be fine. 8-10 inches is more than far enough off the tank. Dont forget about the heat. SOMETIMES an open top MH is cooller than pc right on top of the tank.

Thanks for the input guys,
I do gonna create plenty of overhangs for the inhabitants.. I hope they wont mind the amt of light. However, would it be too much light for the corals (zoos, mushrooms and ricordeas)?
Im thinking of using the 20k bulb..

You'll have to play around with the height and the shading. Maybe it's just only me, but I think zoas get better color under MH than PC. The ones from under PC always look dull to me.

Don't bleach or melt your yumas. Pink and orange ones don't seem to take well to heat and light.

Hey, thanks alot for the input. I think i have decided to use the metal halide lighting. Thinking of getting the JBJ k2 viper as it seems to be the simplest one to install for me. And i will replace the bulb right away to 20k. Can you tell me what are the symptoms before each corals die off due to too much lighting? Such as the zoas and shrooms..
