Midas Blenny in QT - started flicking

Hello,

On March 23rd I bought a Midas Blenny who is currently in a QT.

When I bought him, he came with a rock because we couldn't get him out.

Yesterday he finally started getting comfortable and would swim around the tank, runs back to the rock when he sees me but after a while he comes out cautiously.

This morning, I noticed him flicking against the decoration/rocks and sometimes reaching for his tail and biting it.

He has been eating since day 1, he spits out most pellets but he eats all frozen food.
He doesn't seem to have any spots on his body, it's hard to tell because i don't get much time to see his while body except when he goes to flick.
His breathing is difficult to tell, his gills open up but they are not rapid or don't look out of the ordinary.

I added API General cure which has Metro/Prazi and I hope it's just flukes that he will rid of.

I would like other opinions, also some advice about the live rock that is in there and the implications of medicating.

How long has the QT been set up and have you checked ammonia? If at 0 I would see what the General Cure does. Continue to observe for any other symptoms. If you want to confirm flukes do a FW dip.

i set it up the same day with a seeded sponge from DT. I checked Ammonia with Salifert and it says 0
Ammonia badge from Seachem is not fully yellow though, it looks closer to the green (alert side)

Yes, fortunately crypto is not a quick killer, so you have time. Blennies tolerate CP very well IME.

Fantastic, this will be my first time adding CP with live rock. Normally it's just the fish with a pvc pipe and i put them through a 30 day regimen of treatment with water changes every 4 days.

I don't want to remove the live rock because it seems to be his safety blanket and i don't want to add anymore stress to this guy.

Should I consider adding a little more than the 40MG/G?

If you have a reef tank you may as well remove the rock as you wont be able to transfer it to the display tank.

Consensus is that LR doesn't adsorb CP, so you are probably safe leaving it in. If the rock has a lot of algae on it, keep an eye on your ammonia levels, because the CP will kill all of the algae. Best to treat without the lights as well, since CP is photosensitive (we don't know how photosensitive it is, but since you can't measure it in solution, best to not take chances). Ambient room light is fine.

Thank, the rocks doesn't seem to have any algae on it but its very porous. My qt is always dark. I'll put the standard dose in and monitor as usual.

Will keep u posted.

Good morning,

Yesterday I noticed the Blenny at his worst. He was racing around the tank and flashing against anything he can with many white spots around his body.

Today is his last day with API General cure (Prazi/Metro combo), I will begin CP tomorrow.

Is it possible that he had flukes and all the white spots are the dead flukes? I notice they dissapear after he flashes against rock work.

Here is a video of him with all the white spots; http://youtu.be/PrTKo2CrbLU

At the 25 second mark he come out for some food and you can see all the white spots on his body.
At the 1 minute mark he comes out to scratch (bit his tail).

Do you have the CP on hand? If that is the course you are going with I would take out the General Cure and start CP. Those spots are not flukes.

Yes I do,

I am going to do a water change today, throw in some carbon and then add CP (after removing the carbon).

I have 7 gallons of water, I will change out 3 gallons. How long will the carbon take to remove GeneralCure from 4 gallons of water?

The sooner I can start the better.

Last night at around 7 PM I added CP. This morning he barely has any spots left. I'm not sure if the Ich ran it's course and fell off or if CP treated him that quickly.

Lenny the Blenny says thanks again for the help. i'll keep him in for 30 days and monitor this little guy.

It's just crypto running its course. CP only affects the free-swimming theront stage. Be sure to keep the aquarium lights off (ambient room light only), as CP is degraded by direct lighting. I've experienced treatment failures when running the lights, even a low-end CFL bulb.
