Hello I will be using a 13 W Flood lamp = 65W & want to do reverse of tank lights . What is the Minium light required for growing Chaeto?
Thanks ~

Antman,

It depends on how close the light source is to the alga. I think 13 might cut it if it is close but it is certainly less than optimal. Also, the advertising claim that a 13w pc lamp puts out the light of a 65w incandescent lamp doesn't mean anything for photosynthetic organisms. It is still a 13w lamp. I use a 45w screw-in PC lamp in a dome-shaped "shop light" fixture (both availble at wal-mart or a hardware store) on my 'fuge. I have pics in my gallery.

Does light spectrum come into play when dealing with these macro's. I have Chaeto in the refuge section of my sump. I am using a standard clip on reptile fixture with a reflective dome. I am using a 10 watt PC bulb made by All-Glass Aquarium that is rated at 6500K. Now I also have another bulb from my local lighting store that is a 23 watt PC bulb with a 5000K rating. Which one would be better? Also, what is the appropriate photoperiod for a chaeto fuge? I am currently running it from midnight to 8am

I run a lights of america 65 watt floodlight that I bought from costco. It has a spectrum of I believe 6500 or 6700 and the plants really grow well under it and fits perfectly over the top of the tank.

Buy the largest wattage pc bulb with the lowest (warmest) kelvin rating. I use a 42W general electric from HD with a fixture like 2307. It puts out a considerable amount of light.
