Mixing 400g of salt,,, still cloudy?

guess this is a legitimate question. I put in the salt last night and it has been mixing since. My question is how long before it clears up. Is this unusual. I have never mixed this much before and it seems odd that it is still cloudy.

I filled sump and tank with RO and used Red Sea Coral Pro.

You can see my thread to the build here.

Thanks

Does it look any better since yesterday? If so then just wait it out if not you may have gotten a bad batch of salt.

This is just a guess but its also a bump for you.

what did you put in the tank first? water or salt?

Today it is somewhat better but still cloudy. I put in all the water first then added the salt. I would say I added it slowly over about 2 hours time and was mixing with the recirc pump and powerheads, not to mention a big plastic spoon to keep piles suspended.

if the water was in there first you should have been OK unlesss the water was really cold. was the water cloudy before the salt?
may be a bad batch if it does not clear up. whats the salinity at now?

I had that same issue with my 300g. I filled it up with water and then put the salt in to mix. I thought it never was going to clear up. After a week, you could finally start seeing through the water. You can see this progress on my thread in the beginning pages. I added a skimmer and heater which expedited this process.

I agree, throw a heater in there and check the sal, if you you didnt measure with a refract or something and jsut went with the bucket measurements, you may be off enough to cause problems, if you fill with really cold water that can also interfear with clearing up. lastly, if the salt was super concentrated, ie a whole bucket of salt dumped in the tank and clumped up and was not stirred quickly, can also cause problems

The RO water in the tank and sump were freshly made, ie I just completed filling it which took 5 days and was crystal clear. I had a heater in there and had the temp around 72 when I added the salt. The temp is 76 now. The salinity is 1.022 and there is still more of a tan tint to the water.

I will give a week or so. After that I will be contacting the Red Sea people.

Good news finally, Today I put a filter sock on it and when I came home tonight the filter sock was brown. It definitely filtered out something. I will post some pics of the sock tomorrow. The water is so much clearer now but it still has a tanish tint to it. I replaced the dirty sock with a new one so I will see how it looks in the morning and post some pics.

yeah, if you used rodi and have some kind of brown stuff in there, I would def get ahold of red sea and see what they think.

sounds more and more like a bad batch. It happens some times. Deffinately get a hold of red sea and see what they say.

I guess that I will now since it is still not clearing up and still brown. Does anyone have any contact information for Red Sea salt, their website is vague with no phone numbers just an email site. I wrote but well see how long before they respond.

COULD OF BEEN JUST SOMETHING IN THE TANK TOO, DID U CLEANED THE TANK B4 FILLING UP W/ WATER?

Yes, I cleaned the tank with 70 isopropyl alcohol. On a seperate occasion I ran tap into the tank and sump and rinsed. I then filled sump and skimmer with RO and vinegar and let go a couple days, then rinsed. Filled the whole system up with RO, let it run a couple of days, drained. Refilled with RO and added salt.

Here is a pic of the filter sock.

I recieved an email this morning letting me know that Red Sea will replace the 3-175 gallon buckets of salt mix that was used to make the water. I do not know if that means they know of a problem or not with one of the batches I used, I did give them the batch numbers that was contained on inserts of each bucket. So far they have been very quick to handle this.

I have replied to the email asking if they are acknowledging a problem with a batch and if the brown was dangerous to livestock and if there were any special cleanup procedures needed before I mix agian.

I will keep update agian when I/if I hear back from them.

Try running a good sized batch of carbon in the tank. This may help if there is any thing that got in the tank or salt batch. Also try testing your chemicals to see if any are out of wack.

No thanks, at this point if it is screwed up because of a bad batch of salt I am not going to spend anymore time trying to fix it. I should not have to do anything but mix and enjoy.

Enjoy,, thats something I have not been able to do in a long time.
