Mobay, Jamaica

I've got a five day trip scheduled to Montego Bay, Jamaica.

Is the diving any good there? Any suggestions on which operators to go with?

No, the diving is not good anywhere in Jamaica. It is over dived and fished out. Diving in Jamaica is highly regulated. All must stay in a group. All must have the same identical profile.

Ah, Cozumel, that is a great location. Sorry about the bad news with regards to Jamaica.

Yeah, Cozumel is great. Made my first saltwater dive there last May. It was a good place to start out for sure!!

Beat the heck out of the quarries here in Illinois :)

Still a shame about Jamaica. I was hoping to at least get one decent dive in while I'm there.

You can. I dove in Negril and hired a private dive guide. Most of Jamaica is in bad shape thanks to rookies killing everything, but once you drop down to 80 feet or below, Jamiaca looks as good as any reef in the Caribbean. Huge barrel sponges, big gorgs, lotsa macro life like shrimp and arrow crabs, etc. If you want big fish forget about it - they all get trapped or speared on site and become dinner. The key is avoiding the dive boat at your resort. There you will have to dive the profile predetermined for the boat. You will also not be allowed to go below 60 feet (hence why 80 feet and below looks great).

See, and again, that's a problem for us. I'm certified, but I've never been deeper than about 60 feet, and my wife just takes the resort course most of the time because she hasn't had time to get certified at home, and doesn't want to spend an entire vacation getting certified.

Maybe I can talk her in to letting me go alone one morning.

Thanks. Henry right?

Yes, Henry.

Jamaica is the king of resort courses ~ and hence why shallow reefs are destroyed there. Tell your wife to get certified for once and stop being part of the problem ;)

Seriously though, she can do the study at home thing where she does the classroom 100% at home, takes all but the final at home, and travels with her tests. Your resort will accept the tests, do her in-water check out dives (she will be in the water anyway, right?), and at the end take the final at the resort. Zero resort time wasted assuming your DM will let you have a Mai Tia during the exam ;)

Going one morning by yourself won't alleviate your depth problem unless you book that one day on a private charter. Also, if you can't show your resort that you are capable of diving 100 feet and that you've done it regularly before, they will likely not let you go down that deep. For all the pot smoking they do there and their "no worries mon" attitude, this is one area they don't relax on.

But don't get hung up on diving only. You will enjoy it. Its 82 degrees with 100 feet of visibility. Its not Illinois rock quarry boring. And for the record, I have been to Cozumel, Utila, Roatan, Bonaire, and Florida Keys each one time. I went to Jamaica twice - it's a fun place if you know how to have fun. Relax and get your groove on! :)

I plan to have some fun for sure. We have a group of 12 going, so fun won't be a problem :)

Thanks for the input.

Oh... one last word of advice. Get out of Montego Bay as often and as much as you can. Not a great place to see or stay. Try to take tours to Negril, Ochos Rios, Blue Mountain, etc. Mo Bay is really dirty and not all that safe. Not wise to walk around after dark on many of the city streets.

Also, if you do not want to buy from the street peddlers (hair braids, jewelry, cravings, drugs, etc) do not even acknowledge them. Saying "no" doesn't work they will keep asking and following once they have your attention. Just simply ignore them and act like they are invisible.

If you are off the resort after dark do not have any valuables or cash on you that you intend to return with.

Ok so more than one word...

I've heard Montego is a bit sketchy after dark. We may take a few side trips, but I'd venture to guess that we'll spend most of our trip on the resort as most of us are really just looking to veg out on this trip.

Any particular tours you'd recommend?

Good advice.

Duns river falls and make sure if you venture out of your resort you are with a guide. The island in general is not to safe. I went there a few years to dive and was shocked by how poor the reefs were. It is one place I would not go back to.

Hopefully you just mean you wouldn't go back to dive!!! I'm hoping that our resort and vacation will at least be enjoyable! I've been to Mexico 3 times, but the group I'm going with wanted to try Jamaica, so here we go!

Thanks again for the tips/advice guys.
