Monster CRAB!

Hi,

I have had a large crab in my tank now for quite a while. I assume they he is a hitch hiker as I haven't bought him. I am not sure what he are but has grown so big that now its feeding off other animals. It has devoured a peppermint shrimp(a large one at that) a red hermit and a blue hermit and other small crustations and now I am starting to be scared for the safety of my fish. I have seen the crab come out only at night. He is brownish-red and has very fuzzy legs like a tarantula. He is about 3-4 inches long. I would really like to get him out but have never seen any traps for something that size. Does anyone have any idea what type of crab he might be and how I can evict this monster????

try looking up gorilla crab there the fuzzy-ish type and very bad they can and will eat your fish and they do grow quickly your best bet it to find the rock he lives on and take it out and get him or a 20 oz. bottle with the top cut off with some bait in it. good luck but id try to remove him quickly

I've never been able to figure out the logic of the bottle with inverted top thing. If they can crawl into the opening why can't they crawl back out?

they have trouble getting to it, and its going the wrong way,in order to get through some where the best way is to go in to concave areas, the top of the bottle is very convex, a smart critter like an octopus gets out very easily, crabs are not very smart.

I have thought about taking out the rock that he lives in, however he lives in the largest piece in the tank. It costed me $200 dollars and that's quite an expensive home for a beast. I will try the bottle thing. Anyone know what I should bait the bottle with?

Put a little bait (even an algae wafer) in a jar and prop the jar up against the rock he lives in. Leave it overnight and you should have him. It might take more than a night if he's not hungry. I have caught a few like this, they go into the jar for the food or out of curiosity and they can't climb up the glass to get back out.

If you have a pint sized beer glass, lean it against the rock(60 degrees-ish). Put some raw fish or shrimp at the bottom of the glass. The crab can climb into the glass by crawling over the rock, once he is in the glass, his legs will not have the grip on smooth glass surface and become trapped in the glass. You can get a beer glass at wal-mart for $1. Afterward you can celebrate by drinking beer with the glass.
