Monti Pic Question

I've been trying to capture the polyps on my montipora mollis but I'm not sure why my camera can't seem to focus on this piece. I seem to be able to get close up shots of other corals. Any Ideas?

Also, what kind of zoom would I need to get a close up shot of a polyp of this coral?

It looks like glass distortion, are you holding the lens perpendicular to the glass?

I agree. you need the lens as perpendicular to the glass as possible.

And what camera are you using? A tripod will help you a lot, and if your camera allows you to set the aperture try a small aperture (big f number). If you do use a tripod, try the self-timer too.
