moorish Idol

What are your experiences with the moorish idol? I'm thinking of trying one out and have noticed that at my LFS they have a medium to large one that is eating frozen and flake food...

im pretty sure there is an entire thread dedicated to keeping morish idols on this site. I have read a few pages myself. Everything that i have ever found on them says that they are damn near impossible to keep alive and are only to be tried by an expert aquarist. Scott Michaels says the same thing and warns against them in his book. My LFS has even told me that they are a waste of money. Getting them eating and keeping them from getting stressed was the biggest problems i have found through my research on them. Cool looking fish.... but very difficult to keep.

Pitt:

Read ReefSurge's sig, 240G tank, 60G sump, 70G chaeto, 70G DSB. Over 400 gallon of total system water! I welcome ReefSurge to try them out, preferably a pair of them (if one pair can be found). A lot of people are having success with them in a large tank.

I suppose with those specs he would have a better chance than most..... but as you said.... i would be sure to get a pair. From what i have heard it seems that they do better in pairs. Either way... i wish him luck.

i agree. if you are an experienced aquarist (not talking rocket scientist, but you at least have you r ducks in a row and your weekly water changes going) i say try one if it is eating bot h frozen and prepared and is nice an fat. i have had great success with these guys in passive community tanks and reef aquariums.
they are not as taboo as they used to be.

i have had my Moorish Idol for about 3 weeks now ... he is in a 6 foot long 120 gallon acrylic tank. he is eating like a pig .,,, i feed him frozen squid ,,he loves it...people are very surprized that my moorish idol is eating but he is doing great...so im not sure why they say that they are hard to take care of.... i did my research on them before i bought them to make sure that i could have one in my tank...
