More light turns red orange?

Someone told me in a matter fo fact way that all you have to do to turn RPE's into Envy Ornage is to give them tons of light. After multiple questions on what lighting he was running, I could get no response, but he swore up and down that it made my 250W DE AB 10k's and VHO's look like NO's... I have never heard anyone else mentino any color changes that drastic by giving more light to RPE's. In fact, IME and the experience of many others who have posted, more light on many PE's brings out the white speckles. I asked for pics, but he said he only has pics of the RPE's-didn't think to take any of them when he 'turned them orange'.

Has anyone ever turned RPE's to OPE's or Envy Orange? It seems highly unlikely to me, as the Envy's sell for $100/polyp. If they were just recolored reds under super high light, they would quickly turn back to red once someone bought them, as I would assume that very few people run so much more light than I have for zoas. My lighting is over a mixed display. The SPS mostly burn from it and most of my LPS have to be really shaded to stop them from turning brown and receding. I just want to see what you all have experienced. More light means more white speckles in my tank on PE's... Envy Orange have long been at the top of my list (well before they went through the roof at $100/head).

Sounds interesting. I could believe it too.

I have several zoas that turn from red to orange with more light... Armageddon, Armor of God, Ruby Glow, and Ruby Red.

Guess I should do an experiment with the RPE :)

I guess I've got a few could lose to the cause, if necessary. If I can figure it out, I guess I should hang a shelf or something to place a few polyps on different levels. Monitor time frame and appearance? With different lighting schemes, we might find different things...

interesting, who claimed this information? (PM me if you need to).

250W DE AB 10k's is freakin BRIGHT! i know someone who put that exact same light set up, with RO pendants over a 50g breeder. just about everything burns IMO that close to lights that strong. shoot, those lights are brighter/stronger/more intense than alot of 400w SE bulbs i've seen.

i honestly dont see how zoas look any good under light that white/yellow. but as long as you like it, thats all that matters ;)

i do have my suspicions though, if anyone who is in the business of selling them, claims that red will turn to orange under brighter lights. i gota see picture proof first. :)

surf,

I'm not particularly happy with the color... I got them initially because I had the SPS itch at the time and for sps, colors start to pop over time. Of course, I think they are showing signs of sunburn in some cases, which is adding to the color (lightening, but seemingly healthy lightening of tissue). I am in the process of setting up a 120 LPS/zoa tank that will run 175W MH and VHO's, maybe even 12K's for the MH. I know they don;t give much par, but the color may be incredible. I may go with an XM 10K or something (these ballasts don't run Ushios very well, or I'd go with Ushio 10K's). I kinda thought they blasted everything, too... I'll PM the name, but I don't think he is affilitated with a vendor (but could be wrong).

yeah, i know what you are talking about with the sps lightening up. some say they like that, others dont. i'm one of the people who dont like it. yes, the tips look cool and bright, but the colors on the rest of the sps skeleton dont look all that exciting.

i'd much rather have very cool colors with a 14k-20k bulb, and sacrifice growth. for a 120g zoa/lps tank, i think you'd be much better off with 250w 14k's, 15k, or even 20k's. it will make your stuff look amazing. 175w just doesnt have enough punch to get to the bottom of a tank that deep.

if you dont like the 10k AB's, you arent gonna like the XM 10k, they are just as yellow looking after they burn in, IMO.

I don't believe it....Personally I have a single polyp under 250w MH 14k and 220 watts VHO, and it has started to bleach and is nowhere near the color red that it was under the LFS lights. It is 8 inches from the light and doesn't seem to like it one bit....I know I have read many times that corals that have red in there color or are red come from deeper waters. So I am wondering if they are a low light zoa myself. This polyp is one of those RPEs that have the bright green mouth with the purple and vivid red accents....I changed the location so it is getting indirect light from the MH and mostly VHO.....
