I like Triggers

hey guys im starting to set up my 240 gallon FOWLR and needed to know something. i buddy of mine at vivid aquariums gave me about 180 pounds of liverock from a tank they broke down. it was sitting in a few 60 gallon garbage cans dry. we are going to cycle it soon in those trash cans but wanted to know if since mostly everything has died off from being out of water for about 2 months, would it be ok to cycle it in freshwater? doing 50% water changes daily and 100% weekly until levels are correct? thanks

The bacteria that breaks down waste (ammonia, nitrite, ect) is different in FW than in SW. Therefore all of the bacteria that "cycled" the rock would die once exposed to SW.

I would also cycle it in the tank. Make sure the tank is dark to prevent algae blooms. Maybe throw a blue tarp on it.
