Morish Idol

Have seen two tanks that have successfully introduced a moorish idol. The problem is I have heard different opinions about how reef safe they are. I want to make this fish the center piece of my 240 display system.

Anyone have any tip/tricks on keeping this fish or info on how reef safe?

it will eat meaty LPS corals.

nips on sponges and mushrooms too.

SPS they dont do too much damage to.

get one from hawaii, make sure its eating, and you will need to feed it ALOT. they are pigs.

I have a MI now for about 2 years in my mixed reef. I have meaty LPS and other things in my tank. the only thing he touches is zoanthus. He eat all of my zoanthus in the tank. And he eat my superman rainbow montipora. Never touched any other corals.

Would you say it's still worth it even though it ate some of you coral?

Yes its worth it. But I think I had lots of luck with my MI. Some of them can destroy a whole tank if they go crazy.

My first Moorish Idol was in a mixed reef and it didn't touch the LPS I kept, but it did like to break the tips off any and all SPS frags that were placed in the tank. I got mine direct from HI through Les at the now defunct WetPets Hawaii. I remember he QT'd it for 2 weeks before shipping it to me in literally 3 gallons of water. It was eating like a pig right out of the bag. I wound up selling it when I had the crazy idea of switching over to SPS.

My current MI is in a FOWLR. This one came from Liveaquaria and is also a Hawaiian specimen. Healthy from day one, eats anything and everything thrown in the tank. The only thing it fears is the Magnavore cleaning magnet

Mine killed my LPS and nips at Palys and Zoas. It's ify with these fish.
