Most cost-effective way?, and some other Q's

Hi, I've been registered here for several months while lurking around the forums reading various topics. Well, I have a 20 gallon SW tank that I have practiced on for the past 2 and a half months, while I also have a ~300gal freshwater tank that has been up and running for the past 2 years.

Lately, my brother and I have been debating what we would do for the 300gal if we were to transform it to saltwater if our budget allowed it.

My main concern is power consumption. I know that if I were to run a MH setup for a full reef setup I would require at least 1400 watts just to run the lights. The pump and everything else would add a significant amount. I've looked around the forums for a good article about lighting and power consumption but couldn't find any.

Another idea was to run a FOWLR with some artificial corals to save on lighting requirments. Since my brother is really into wanting to get a anemome for our tank, I was thinking about just using PC or VHO lighting to be able to support it.

What other ways would be possible for this kind of tank where we could basically get the best bang for the buck?

I've already calculated at least $400 or so for a skimmer, either a G4 or Octopus 200 recirc model. As for the filter, I already have a ocean clear 375 running with a Bio-Rocker. I don't know how the Bio-Rocker will perform on reefs since I haven't seen anyone on RC run with one, so if that doesn't work then I'll sell it for a skimmer or something else I need in order to make this tank work. What would you guys suggest for me to change in my filtration, or any other suggestions?
Thanks in advance.

I am going with T-5 VHOs for my 180 tank. It will lower your overall wattage usage. But definitely continue to look for information. It will save you money. Find ways of making things more efficient. Especially with your main system pump which many people overlook that usually draws/uses more power than the lighting. ~Matt

hmmm.... I was looking at lights the other day and was thinking about going with 2 48" Coralife Aqualights, the ones that have the 2 actinic and 2 10k bulbs. So far my planned equipment for the transformation is as follows:

octopus skimmer 200 recirc
Pan World 100PX-X
2xSeio M620's
2xCoralife 48 Inch Aqualight
2xWON Pro-Heat IC Heater 350 W 12.5 I

I don't really know what pump to get for the octopus skimmer. Would it still be ok if I were to gravity feed it? The total for the list above and some other neccesities like a hydrometer and salt mix equal up to $1300. Man, I know ill have a lot of fun building this tank when I have the funds :D
