Most expensive/rare corals.

You can answer all or one of the questions.

1) What is your most expensive coral you have/bought?
2) What is the most expensive coral you would like to have?
3) What is the most expensive coral you would not buy?(Something that is expensive but you don't want to have.)
also, pics or your rare/expensive stuff would be cool.

I've bought some sps frags that were pretty expensive. I think one blue/green tort was 80 bucks. The most expensive I have purchased is probably some ricordia. I know that can get to be over 100 dollars a polyp. I probably would never buy carnation tree corals, or sun corals know matter what the price.

The funny thing is the rare/expensive corals are very trendy.

They get a fancy name attached to them, get overpriced, then end up in the hands of fellow reefers who then grow them out, frag them out, and the price drops. following these trends is kind of like those first people who paid $600 for an I-phone only to have the price cut 1/3 a month or so later.

my most expensive coral that i have is probably my bullseye mushrooms

the most expensive coral i want is probably a bright red table acro/mille

the most expensive coral i will never buy is watermelon echino - just cause i don't want it really

Not really true IMO..

Some highly sought after SPS are just slow growing and not everyone has tanks that grow it well. Take something like the "purple monster", it has been around for a very long time, and is still as expensive as it gets.

Some of the colorful and rare stags/torts seem to only be cheaper (by a little) because they just grow a bit faster, but again not everyone can grow them well so they stay expensive.

JMO after starting to collect them..

I think your analogy is more accurate in regards to zoas though, but the timeframes are much longer, just since I started in the hobby I have not seen the prices on almost all the rare zoas/palys go down at all, Maybe in a couple years or more they will but not in months...

Really, not all that many people are propagating compared to buying. I wish everyopne was just growing massive amounts of the coral they bought, but I just do not see it happening, I personaly have had a lot of success but have yet to need to set up a propagation tank...

I think the real price drops you are seeing are when something is newly imported in low amounts and is very expensive and has that "ahh" factor because it is new to many, and then starts to be imported more heavily.. I think Duncans are a good recent example.

1) The most expenzive coral I've bought is Duncanopsammia axifuga @ $40/head.

2) The most expensive coral I want either Red or Blue War coral or Blue/Green Tort Acro both about $100 for a medium frag.

3) I've found a great website of these two divers, one based out of Tonga and the other in Austrailia who are offering things basically unknown in the aquarium hobby and barely known to science for an arm and a leg... like a 5"x7" colony of a teal black and red coral that is something like an acan or micromussa but is neither for $600. This thing is beautiful but if nobody knows what it is or how to take care of it $600 is a lot of money to watch something waste away in your tank an possibly crash your whole system.

Well done!!!

1) What is your most expensive coral you have/bought?

I bought an acan lord from a local reef club member for $40. But they gave me a bunch of freebies, so you'd really have to factor those in :)

2) What is the most expensive coral you would like to have?

I want a dendro. They run $50-$70 per polyp for a single polyp or often a little less per for a colony.

3) What is the most expensive coral you would not buy?

What were those called.. some zoas called orange envy, were like insanely priced. Give me some bam bams and I'm happy.

Most expensive coral I bought was a Acropora hoeksemai. It died recently after I moved it :(

Most expensive coral I would like to have is that bluish acropora echinata (ice something or other...)

I'm not a fan of the flat LPS like acans and such, so I probably wouldn't buy one of those.

1) What is your most expensive coral you have/bought?
Acropora Loissettae - Light pink body with bright purple coralites - wild caught and RTN'd in one night 2 weeks later. Won a Sunset Monti at a raffle, I don't really like it though...

2) What is the most expensive coral you would like to have?
Karl's Candlelight Coral

3) What is the most expensive coral you would not buy?(Something that is expensive but you don't want to have.)
Any of those Aussie Acans. I don't really like the way they look, and they're so bleeding expensive!

1) What is your most expensive coral you have/bought?

"Raspberry Lemonade Nasuta" Acro. Expensive for a small frag.. I have actually spent more on larger colonies or ricordia.. but nice encrusted aquacultered SPS frags are worth it. Its doing well.

2) What is the most expensive coral you would like to have?

Already mentioned it in a post above. A frag of Purple monster.

3) What is the most expensive coral you would not buy?

Micromussa's and somewhat less chalice's and Acan's. I just don't get it, at least for the price...
