What do you seasoned sps keepers find to be the most important things in successful sps tanks? A list? GFo reactor? Bio pellets? Over sized skimmer? Etc

I'm not a pro or anything, but physical appearance of how your sps corals are looking will tell you what you specifically need. Don't follow trends, follow what your tank tells you.

I too am no expert but these are a few of the things I've found to be able to grow my sps.

Fairly steady temp.
Steady SG, ato really helps with this
Big 3 stable - Alk, Ca and Mag in that order
Feeding different types of food on alternate days
Good clean/clear water
Good lighting
Good alternating flow from more then one powerhead in multiple directions.
Skimmer is a must have imo to remove excess nutrients if you do not have a refugium.

beyond knowledge, understanding the environment you are trying to replicate and what method works best for your situation. each one has its ups and downs ;however, What most of the equipment in this hobby does is make it less work for the user. The equipment's overall goal is to eradicate, eliminate, reduce the frequency of water changes.
Every aspect is important.
My top 3 - Water quality (Balance, import, export), a great food source (lights/supplemental feeding), Water Changes!
