The fire was caused by improper mixing of fiberglass resins. For all those DIY people out there wanting to make a large fiberglass tank, this should serve as a good warning. Mixing fiberglass resins can be a dangerous job, you have to be very careful and know exactly what your doing with these volitile chemicals.

Hi Gary,

I have not done any huge fiberglass jobs but I have done a decent sized boat hull repair and some little odd and end fiberglass jobs. Is there anything other than flame sources that can cause problems? I used to be a painter and any time I heard about a fire caused by painting or wood finishing it was due to a stupid smoker. One was caused by a waterheater pilot flame. Are there other things people need to be aware of?

If you mix too much activator in the resin it can cause a molten fire and if in a contained space will explode. The resin can make it hard to put out.
