moulting crabs

Ok so my girlfriend asked me what do we do when the hermits moult?do we get there legs out or leave them?what about the shrimp and the sally lightfoot crab? Do I fish out the body or leave it to the tank?

Normally when my hermit moults I don't get the chance to go near the moult skin. It gets pulled back into the shell and eaten!

As far as I know most critters will eat most of their moultskins given the chance, as it allows them to recover nutrients. So I'd say just leave them for a couple of days at least then pull out anything left, but without disturbing the animal in any way, as stress during a moult or before the new skin hardens can be fatal.

Hope this helps,

Wilf

Hi there ;)

No, You should let the exosceleton inside, the crabs themselves and many other little critters eta it up. For the crabs there are worthy nutritients in the old carapace and often they feed on it. After a few days You won't see any remains of the old shells.
