Moved Toadstool

Yesterday i cut my smaller green toadstool leather at the base of its stalk and moved it onto another rock. It was a clean cut and after placing it in its new spot it opened up and seems to be healing fine. My question is why did my other larger toadstool leather close up when i cut the smaller one. Did it release something into the water when i cut it causing the other one to close up? I had to move the cutting once more today and when i did that the larger one completely closed again.

Yep, chemical warfare from the leathers. A protein skimmer will take care of it fairly quickly, or if you have an underpowered skimmer, then your leather may stay closed for a few days and then shed it's skin. It's usually nothing to worry about long term though. As long as your water quality is good, then the cut leather will heal quickly and the other leather will be happy again. The farther away the leathers are from each other, then the quicker they recover, but I wouldn't move them if they already like their positioning.
