Moving Guide

Well, looks like i might be moving soon, just wondering what advice people have when it comes to moving a large saltwater tank. The specs of mine are in my signature. Obviously i can handle the grunt work of moving everything, just wondering if anyone has advice on methods to moving or tips? Thanks..

also, ill be moving about 2hrs away.

Patience, air pumps, lots of containers( i have 55 gallon drums if you need any) and some kind of plan( although they never go as planned ) and a plug-in lighter to electric outlet socket thing(auto-zone or A&A ). Then you can plug a heater and the air pump in for your fish.

Invest in rubbermaid containers from Walmart, but don't fill them more than halfway with water (or they start to bulge...not that I've ever had one blow). They're great for moving rock..and you don't need to keep the rock submerged..With just a few inches of water, the splashing during the move will keep things wet. If you're really nervous about it you can wrap wet newspaper around them too, but IMO you don't need it.

Find folks with salt buckets too, they're great for moving other stuff.

If you can manage, drain the tank, but leave the sand..unless you really disturb it draining it out. It's less work putting it all back together.

Also have new water made and heated in advance..move your RO the day before the tank and start filling something (like brute trash cans) if you can. Personally I don't bother trying to save a whole lot of water if I can prepare in advance.

I've moved tanks several times so there are so many different things you can do but I'll give you one major warning...know your corals and animals...don't mix things that don't like moving together. I made the mistake of moving fish with an anemone once and when I started acclimating the tub that had them in the anemone stressed and wiped most of the fish out. I was only "moving" from one tank to another (so there was no travel), but what a disaster.

Good luck.

And if you're moving 2 hours south and you need some help, let me know. I live near Reading so 2 hours south of you now is here. :)

i would be moving from wilkes-barre to havertown, pa move is still questionable (depending on how things pan out at my current job) i've wanted to upgrade tanks for sometime, so ideally id like to get a new tank down there (180 gallon or so) and just move everything little by little. I imagine this will be the best way to do it, otherwise ill bag all the critters up and put the rock in salt buckets or bins, try to leave an inch of water on the sandbed and make at least 50 gallons of new water at its new home... Thanks for all the input guys, I am really not looking forward to moving this thing, but cannot take the loss in $$$ selling it as a complete package. ( i have about 4k invested so far...probably couldn't sell for more than 600-800$)

The two biggest killers are when water stops! and water fouling in the bag or container. if water stands still long enough your fish basically suffocate! it can happen fairly quickly depending on conditions. Picture grabbing your tank like a snow globe and shaking the heck out of it, How would your tank look? A bit of preparatory cleaning would go a long way!
