Moving Questions

Hello, I have my aquarium set up in my room and want to move it into the dining room so the whole family can enjoy it.(And so Im not shut in my room all day;) )
Can i remove some of the water to make it lighter and then put that water back in when it's moved?
Also, do you think the tank will warp?
I thought about taking out about 50% of the water and replacing it with new water. Would that be okay or would it mess up my water params?

Thanks in advance!

PS. Im fourteen so a lighter method would be best! Ill have my parents help moving it.

Is this the 30gallon from your sig? If so you shouldn't move it with any water in it. My rec is to remove all the water, LR, and orgs and transport the tank with just the sand bed. You'd be surprised at how heavy even just that is.

I recently moved my 29g while leaving the gravel and a few inches of water in it for the fish, and was really worried the bottom was going to blow out. When I move my 29g reef next month I'm removing everything but the sand for sure.

Ok, and it will be okay to add that removed water back into the tank when it's put in its new place or would it be okay to add new SW?

I agree with the recommendation to remove all water. It will be extremely heavy if you leave any water in, and you'll risk stressing the tank's seams if you don't keep it perfectly level while moving it when filled.

For a previous move, I pumped my water into a clean brute trashcan, and then used some of the same water to refill the tank after the move. That helped avoid having to re-acclimate my fish. I added new water as well (my weekly water change). When moving, be very cautious with your sandbed. If you stir it up, as is likely when removing/adding water, you can cause your tank to crash or cycle. Many people recommend using new sand after a move. I went BB.

Good luck!

It's easy to leave the sand bed undisturbed in your move. With smaller tanks like yours I usually end up doing a 50% WC; the other 50% I siphon out after stirring up the sand bed to get some detritus out. I tend to stir up only the upper half of the sand bed, in order to leave the deeper anaerobic areas undisturbed.

I have moved my 30g believe me, it's way heavy. Empty all the water out. Leave the sand undisturbed best as possible. I used the orange 5 gallon buckets from Home Depot, trust me your Mom and Dad will use them you are done. Move the stand, tank and then refill, with the rocks first. Good luck.

i wish i had a tank when I was 14. also, for being 14 you sure know the right place to get help. very well done MBWannaBee.
