moving to the area

Hi there,
It's not good imo.
I just visited Clark's recently, going to get back into the hobby in the near future. Remember Clark's? I loved their store years ago. Well they removed their huge reef display tank, and they don't even have any corals in their current, smaller tank, which is inside that internal, darker room. I think I saw rock anemones and a couple of small zoanthid colonies a few of weeks ago. It was sad.
Maybe they order stuff for customers? I don't know.
I haven't been to fins and critters, or whatever the one is called around San Mateo. I don't even know if they're open anymore either. I used to know the owners of both Clark's and the one on San Mateo but it I'm not even sure if they are the owners anymore so I'm not good help there.
Does anyone else know of any place or is it online ordering or meet up swapping that is what's done nowadays?

Welcome back to Abq naebert02.

is this the only lfs?? swr gets all there coral frm the l.a. dist.. and most pieces have die off... the lady at the store didnt have prices or knew what the name of some of the corals.. someone needs to open a good store in this area

this is the only Good store in town....sounds like you spoke to someone who is just there as "extra help"..talk to rob or Jen..You are right though everyone gets the same coral from all the same people in LA. ...Just remember YOU ARE IN NM..There are only a few here that are REALLY progressive...Besides there is not really enough money here for the lavish stores that you are used to G stone!!

i wouldnt say stores are lavish in the o.c... they just have quality and are well planned out... and i do think i was talking with Jen..i would just think they would look for a wholesaler overseas.. for a $75 tang, they want $200.. thats just crazy..they claim shipping is the prblm.. but in l.a.. they are also getting shipped frm half way around the world..

I have all the connections for wholesale as well( I had been in the retail side of it for 10 yrs)..
We even were getting tranship..that is where the really cool stuff comes from!!
I have spoken to them about it..Something they dont really want to take the plunge on unfortunatley...I feel you pain good luck!!

ok i have looked into retail spots in Los Lunas (this is where i'm living) there are a few off "6" .. My question is do you think people would be willing to drive to Los Lunas for a good store? it seams like people dont want to get out of thier bubble here in NM? would you guys be willing to trave to a store with good help and good advice?

Honestley No...people have a hard enough time driving 15 min. in town to go to a store..unless it was an amazing store you probably would only have locals and a handful of in towners driving there...
although mark is out there he would be a good cust. until his reef was stocked..

i have heard that about this area, no one wants to drive.. i guess Alb is the area i need to look at.. maybe Rio Rancho?

well given the economy and the fact that two stores went under in the last yr. and a half..
You would have to compete w/ swrc and the internet simultaneously..

True about the economy, but I feel like they stores that are left aren’t very good and with better advice, several tanks exhibiting "low light " "mid light" and "high light" and the life that can be keep in each. I would do tubs with pricing clearly marked and sell equipment that I have used and now is good. No gimmicks and an sps tank ran on MH's. With the amount of doc's in the area there would be a good amount of service work. The stores around here push the Berlin style sumps and set up. Why not run a fuge? Next would be to start a reef gathering to swap and trade ideas. I have a good wholesaler lined up and could offer fish and coral and a good price, not $250 for a $75 tang. I don’t know right now this is just a dream but there is a serious need for a good store in the state.

When i was living there, 3 good stores come to mind and SWRC is one of them. I know exactly how you feel about having a "good store" but made due with what Albq had to offer. I now live in AZ and LSF here are extremely diffrent probably more of what you are use to in LA. I think the main problem is NM only has a handfull of hard core reefers and collectors. That being said stores that open up in NM are catering to newbies and beginers of the hobby, (supply and demand) I think you have a good idea and if you can bring cheaper prices to Albq then maybe there would be more people turning into "hard core" reef heads.

I just don't think there is enough there yet. I only knew 4 maybe 5, reign is one of them and we would all utilize the Internet to bring in the good stuff to Albq. reign would sometimes get me some not so common stuff as well. Just hate hearing LSF in Albq go down! I say if you can go for it and reign would be a very good resource!

thor :D

I already hear the bank laughing. While you're at it tell them you have between 7 and 10 thousand a month in upkeep with the possibility of having all your livestock die off at the drop of a hat due to a 4 hour power outage in the middle of the night or even better yet come up with a single industry reference to back up your experience. I look forward to the new "Wal-Fish" Step up or step OFF.

There is a good reason SWRC is still up and running strong in NM, from what I remember the customer service is top notch and they would also get you what you are looking for. I have been a long time customer of the owner and back in the day he has provided me with SPS when no one in Albq has even dare to keep them.

I still think NM could use one more store and would like to see that happen, if you dare more power to you. Others have tried but SWRC still remains. Good luck!
