Mp 40 or Gyre 130

I had to down size a bit. I moved into a new smaller house and have no room for my 120. I have been out of the saltwater hobby for like 5 months now and it stinks. I will be setting up a 65 gallon with sump and want to know what is everyones take on these two pumps. I am not sure if I will need 2 MP40s and I don't know if the Gyre130 will hold up. I think I will have a tank with some corals but they will not be the main focus. It will be fish and shrimp snails crabs. Stuff like that.

I would go with the gyre130/150 if you want to keep cost down. They push more water than it appears. if real estate in the tank is limited, I would go with the mp40. you probably only need one for the 65gal

Gyre hands down Ecotech is way overpriced and does not do is half of what gyre does I used to run MPS and now only the gyre

Keep in mind that, reviews are some what misleading when it comes to reliability (to an extent). It shows all the complaints, but not all happy owners. That goes for any review on any products. Every product has problems and they usually show up in reviews :)

We are running gyres on 4 of our customers tanks and haven't had any problem so far.

We have had couple with problems on the ecotech, but it was only a couple out of 20+ units.

bottom line is, if you have the extra money, ecotech QD is nice. either one you choose, there is always a chance there will be problems.

I guess I was just reading the reviews on the Gyre and everyone was saying that they broke.

Imo the 130 and mp40 aren't really comparable. More like 150/mp40.
They also provide different types of flow. Both serve a purpose.
If corals aren't the center stage and you aren't running sps, I would vote 130.

Just curious, since I'm thinking of moving to the gyre...

You don't think they would support SPS?

I know others have their own opinions, but I personally believe that you would need two gyre in a tank to give you the turbulant flow that I like for sps and even then it isn't as random as I like. I don't think the reverse mode is strong enough.
A good way to handle it is to ask yourself, if these two cost exactly the same which would I get? That's how you usually come to what you feel is best deep inside lol. Let's face it guys, this is a luxury hobby. Let's treat it like one. Making purchases to save money usually end up costing more in upgrades down the road.
Those are my thoughts on what I have been thinking, and that's all I have to say about that.

Much appreciated!

I primarily have a mixed reef, with only a couple SPS frags. I will always stay mixed, but I am trying to get more SPS (now that I don't seem to kill them immediately.)

While I agree with your "if price wasn't an issue" logic, it don't know if I'm there yet with Vortechs.

I have a gyre 130 on my old 90 gallon, it is okay. I was a bit underwhelmed with it, but it works okay. I recently bought a new home and am upgrading to a 240, I went with 4 mp40's. Personally I prefer the Mp40s over the gyre. Id even go with a jebao pump again like the wp or rw series before a gyre. Eventually I'll use the gyre on my sump as a detritus stirrer.

I have the MP-40 on my tank. I've been running it for a number of years and I'm very happy with it. I have used the MP-10 as well. Great pump.

Eco techs support sucks and they all ways want u to spend more on upgrades gyre is easy to deal with i replaced 2 150 gyres in place of 4 mp40s and i have a ton more flow
