Has anyone tried to make a light out of these bulbs.I have a street light and spot light not doing anything. I thought I might try to make a hanging canopy with 4 cooling fans. Does anyone think this would be a good alternative to buying a expensive light. It would be for a 12g nano>

Halides aren't that expensive. They only get up there in price when you buy a complete hood/housing. Retro kits are way more affordable. I got my 175W setup with bulb, reflector, ballast, socket, and all the wires for $160 shipped. Not too bad. Check out these guys:

I don't think the lights you mentioned are gonna do the trick, or more people would be using them.

Mercury vapor or HP sodium will do fine growing corals, and they'll grow fast. However your tank will be urine yellow looking and the colors will be marginal at best. Did I mention the sub 5000K spectrum is perfect for growing algae ?

They put out a lot of light but it's the wrong spectrum.

well ill find other ways of lighting i saw that nanotuners had some cheap up grades as far as lighting goes. thank you all for the advice other wise i might be telling you all later that it is a bad idea. ill try the 70w lide from nanotuners.

It makes SPS and shallow water photosynthetics grow well, but it does look like cat ****, if you are looking for happy corals atm and planning on upgrading later its a fantastic idea IMO

So, if you need to save some money, these lights would be good for frag grow out tanks? Cool, maybe I'll try it.......Great, I'm justifying spending more money by saving money. :mad2:
