Palm Beach County WUD to Flush Lines with Chlorine
For release: June 1, 2011
Contact: Robert Nelton, (561) 493-6062 Senior Public Relations Specialist
Palm Beach County Water Utilities Department rnelton@pbcwater.com
To maintain high water quality in the county’s water distribution system, Palm Beach County Water Utilities Department (WUD) will temporarily modify the disinfection process used to treat our drinking water. The county will be using a somewhat stronger disinfection process to produce chlorine residual instead of a chloramine residual from June 14, 2011, to July 14, 2011. The county will also increase hydrant flushing during this time. This is a preventative maintenance process.

Customers served by the Palm Beach County Water Utilities Department may notice a slight chlorine taste or odor in their tap water during this period. These temporary conditions will not cause adverse health effects. If you are especially sensitive to the taste or odor of chlorine, keep an open container of drinking water in your refrigerator for a few hours to allow the chlorine to dissipate.

Users of home dialysis machines, owners of tropical fish and managers of stores and restaurants with fish and shellfish holding tanks are advised to seek professional advice as the method for removing chlorine residuals differs from removing chloramine residuals from tap water.

This process will not affect Glades Utility Authority customers in Belle Glade, Pahokee and South Bay.

Should you need more information on this change in the water treatment process, please call the Palm Beach County Water Utilities Department at (561) 740-4600, option #3.

this from a member of PBMAS who nows lives in Stuart but a active member of pbmas:

When I was living down in West Palm, they decided to flush the water system and I didn't realize it. It was a complete nightmare! The chlorine overwhelmed my RO/DI unit and killed a pair of Helfrichi's firefish, a mated pair of Hawaiian Flame Wrasses, a mated trio of Sunburst Anthias and a breathtaking supermale Linneatus wrasse that would eat out of my hand. Of course, the chromis and clownfish were just fine.

I was in tears, it was awful losing all of my fish and not understanding why. I bought a chlorine test kit at Home Depot on the advice of Rob from Oceans Below and sure enough, my water had chlorine in it. I was able to prevent further damage by shutting off the ATO, topping off with bottled water and putting some Prime in the system. I also had to replace all of the filters in the RO/DI unit, as chlorine can wreak havoc on the membrane and filters. My corals actually did OK, I only lost a yellow leather. In my experience, chlorine is a lot harder on the fish than the corals, but I also don't keep any particularly demanding corals.

Shortly after moving back down to Stuart, they announced a flush by printing it on my water bill. I was so glad that they gave me some warning! But, having been through it, I don't mess around. So Randy and I filled a huge Brute container with RO/DI to use. It was a pain having that big ol' Brute can in the middle of my kitchen, but it did the trick.

I hope this helps...I think I'm still a little emotionally scarred from losing all of those fish. I wouldn't wish that on anyone!
