My 125 Re-Build

I am hopefully halfway through preparations for rebuilding / moving my 125 tank. Thought it was about time I started a thread so I have a consolidated place to ask for help :)

My current setup is pictured below. It is in my main level family room. I have had it up since mid December. Although it is nice having it there, I do have several issues and have decided to move it.

- As you can see in the full shot, a support post sits about a foot in front of the right side. Not too much of an issue, but is annoying.
- I am using the stock stand. The stand is too short for my tastes and leaves little room for additional equipment.
- I currently have a Marineland Model 3 sump inside it. Was not the ideal purchase now that I have got the tank up and running. Among the issues, the sump does not have room for a larger skimmer, especially the MSX250 I bought recently. (A smaller skimmer including the Marinelands of course would fit fine) The sump is a great design, but is best for a FO tank in my opinion. (FYI, will be for sale soon if you know someone who would like it)
- Location is too isolated with little room to expand... no room access behind it.

Because of these and other reasons I have decided to move it to my basement. Most of the basement is finished with a large unfinished area behind it. After building my stand, I decided to make it all in wall. This will give me a very nice fish room to work with.

I'll add more to the thread over the next couple of weeks. I hope to do the big move within 3 weeks.

Today I took advantage of a Day off and cut out the area where the tank will go. As soon as it warms up, I will prime and paint the stand. I can then get it into the wall and cutout for the tank.

My sump and skimmer in waiting. Is killing me knowing this is sitting waiting while my tank could really use it.

Stand is waiting on paint. My helper pictured here as well.

I have several increases for the CUC I am waiting on. Will do an order after the tank is settled into the new location.

Now... Off to Chicago for my wife's birthday celebration :) ... No fish activities allowed :( Everyone have fun at the meeting.

A little stand progress... Two coats of primer on it and 1 top coat on the underside... considering this is going to be in wall this is all probably overkill... but I figure why the heck not.

I really hope to have it in place this weekend to finish the final prep for the move.

There is no substitute for good help! Our at least a good source of laughs :)

Weather permitting I will put the last two coats of paint on the stand today and then place it in wall.

Paint Done! I am glad I decided to go in wall. I do not want to think what it would have taken to do more/finish painting. Should have it moved into the wall tomorrow and then the build can really get going.

Not an exciting picture, but with how much it took to get to this, a momentous one for me! The plywood top to the base is off to the side. I left it off for now as this will be in wall and wanted easy access if shimming is needed.

Hello,

Your skimmer is sitting in a 27gallon superbox? And on top of what? they look like milk crates?

Hello,

The inner tub is a 'Tough' something or other... Got that kind from HD because it was more sturdy then the standard tub. Better fit for uniseals and as a base for the skimmer. Skimmer still leans a little though so I will put a cutting board on the bottom.

I could not find actual milk crates, but Office Depot had the same in a hanging file holder. Was heavier stock again for stability.

thanks. Your pic looks exactly like the container i have. It came with a yellow lid? Since i only have a 50g stock tank, i'll have to just find something smaller to place it on inside the stock tank.

With some good advice from fellow club members (Thx!) I have the skimmer breaking in now.

It is running with a vinegar solution for a couple of days and then I will switch to using some water from my weekly change. Even now the bubbles produced are amazing. There is a constant flow into the collection cup.

I have the overflow plumbing adjusted for now to keep the water from draining to the main sump.

Are you reinforcing the area where you took the 2x4's out of the wall? That's a pretty wide span (with a floor above) to be removing that much support. At least it is near a wall.
Just thinking out loud.....

he should be fine. those 2x4's werent supporting the floor above. Look at the far right of the pic, that big red pole supporting that metal beam is supporting the floor.

JDL is correct. The wall was not structural in any way. There are support beams ~5 feet on either side of the wall. The header was not even secured to most of the floor joists and there were gaps between.

I will put a single 2X4 header above the opening but it will be mainly for securing the drywall and an attachment point for the trim and hinged access panel I will create.

I have decided to put a plywood back on the stand for extras stability and also to secure the bottom section of drywall. It will also be a better splash guard for under the tank. I think it is a better design, but now I have more painting. :(

Yes, I have ~ 6X10 feet of space behind the tank that will be devoted to the tank. More if needed :)
