My 140G Tank

Thanks to Ted I am now upgrading my 54G CBF to an acrylic Tencor 140G! Woohoo! Everything is pretty much in place and I'll be doing some DYI to get it the way I want it.

One thing I need is lighting. The concern I have here is that top is pretty much covered with the exception of a couple portals. Can anyone chime in as how much light is lost? How does it effect lighting? I'm looking into DIY LED lighting with a Ardunio controller (with a web-app). I'm torn as to getting the 3watt vs 5watt ones. Any input? No matter which way I go with lighting I'm building a suspension rig to hang it from since there is no canopy.

I really like the looks of the no-sand setups but I have an engineer goby that I think would be unhappy with that so I'm thinking of doing half with and half without using some small rocks as a separator/barrier. I'm going to looking to getting a piece of that starboard to put down on it for two reasons... having a white surface and protecting the bottom from scratches. Another thing I'm going to do is create stands for the rocks out of some acrylic I have laying around.

The tank/stand came with an UV sterilizer. What are you thoughts on these?

I'm hoping to have it up and running over the weekend with the basics. I have a 30in MH/PC light fixture I can use until I get the LED lights built.

ops rest of the question. ...lol.... well with the UV there are pros and cons. Pros it will kill bad bacteria and things that will hurt your fish. Cons it will also kill all the beneficial bacteria that travels through it as well. some people like them and others don't. I my self don't really see the necessity in them and would turn around and sell it to help fund the lighting expedition.

Thanks for the input. On the plasma light, is anyone selling it? I've it in action up at ABC but they aren't ready to sell them yet ( at least the last time I talked to Tim.) any DIY kits? The tank is pretty long so I would assume I need more than one light.

Right now I'm battling ich so I'm thinking of putting the sterilizer on my 54 for the time being.

is it more than 6 foot long? did you look at the spread on the video it covers a 6 foot tank. I dont think any one sells them as far a fish stores. you would need to get it from probably a luixm dealer.

yea i think you would need to buy the bulb and heat sink then the reflector. im sure the bulb will come with the ballast to fire it.

I could be wrong, but I don't think the plasma results were as good as expected. especially not for the cost... was Tim happy with it??

The last time I was up there was during the frag meet and they had just installed it. I have email to him to get more information. In my research I see that the Monterrey Aquarium has been running them for about a year now.

Light is light. Get a few MHs and call it a day. :)

With the money you save you can buy me a gem tang!

LOL... True, light is is light... but I like the idea of having more light output without the monthly expense. Right now I can only find one place that sells the plasma kit... $680! That's a bit rich for me right now and that doesn't include a reflector nor some high powered blue LEDs to make the light more pleasing to the eye and corals.

I'm pricing out the LEDs for a DIY and see how much it will cost. If it's too much then I'll have to get another 250watt MH/PC to cover the other half of the tank.

Any plans for the 54? I have one now and if I could get another I'd be willing to make a larger stand to house another 54 for a sump. I've been hoping for a 37 corner bow to use as a sump, but this may be another option.

Jim,

I'm planning on selling it... I'm working on getting the 140 up and running and then will be treating the ich in the 54. Afterward, it's for sale.
