My 285 gallon prepares to fly again !

Five years ago, a 285 gallon tank flew in my upstairs bedroom window. Well, its getting ready to fly out again for two reasons:

1) When I flooded the dining room table (downstairs) a few years ago, I promised (had to) my wife that if any tank water passed through the dining room ceiling again, I would move the tank. Well, a very rude (not really) but certainly overly observant diner guest noticed a spot on the ceiling a few months ago, so that is that.

2) I finally learned about the need to quarantine the hard way. I added one fish to my tank a few months ago and quickly lost it and most (about a dozen) of my other fish. (Don't ask me where or why ... it was my mistake for failing to quarantine). Anyhow, this makes it the perfect time to move the tank.

So here is the plan:

All my live rock, coral and 4 remaining fish will temporarily move to a grey tub that will be set-up in the basement. They will live there with proper skimming, lighting and water movement while I do the following:

1) refinish my tank stand and tank
2) drill the back of my tank so that I can install an overflow along the entire back of the tank like Anthony Calfo has described in his Coral Propagation book
3) finish, wire and plumb the annex ("Annex") that occupies the western half of our garage, which is located approximately 20' east of my house.

The Annex will become the fish room, and will house the sump(s), refugia, sea-grass tank, cryptic tank and any other kind of tank that YOU suggest. Once refinished, the Main tank will be set-up downstairs in the main house against a wall that is closest to the Annex. Those of you who have been to my house will guess correctly that this is where my current fresh water tank resides. With the fish room being located in the Annex/garage 20' to the east, I will have to run all plumbing between the main tank and the sumps, etc. underground. This may even eliminate the need for a chiller !

The Annex is about 12' x 14' so there is lots of room for exciting and interesting tanks. ALL SUGGESTIONS ARE WELCOME AND NEEDED !!

Let me know what you think, and suggest.

Dream On, please !!

Phase II begins.

Best to all,
George Davenport
