Hey Guys,
Much to my suprise, I saw something swimming around one of my overflows this morning. Low and behold, its a baby Bangi... Had no idea this comming...

So I see one. It looks fully colored and patterns are of an adult. Looks to be about a half inch big. Do I have any shot of keeping it alive?

Any pointers greatly appreciated ...

Thanks,

Steve

your best bet is to remove i, seperate grow out tank, feed it rotifers and copepods, and later train it to pellets.

the babies have been in the mouth of the father for last 14 days ! they are live bearers.

good luck

How can you tell if the male is carrying babies. My male's mouth looks puffy and he doesn't close it all the way and the female chases any other bangai that comes near away. I was wondering if he is carrying babies.

Banggais are not livebearers! They are mouthbrooders where the male holds the eggs for approximately 3 weeks. After the eggs hatch he only holds onto them for another day or two before spitting them out.

As for raising the babies, it's quite easy. They will eat baby brine shrimp right from the start. I've had great luck raising the young babies in a breeder's net in my refugium. After they get over 1/2" long I then move them to a growout tank.

If he's that big, he's been in your tank for a while. They're closer to 1/4" when they're first released. When that happens, if you search the tank carefully, you can usually find 20-30 of them hiding in various places, often in clusters. That being the case, I'd say you have a good chance of keeping him alive, because he's been able to survive this long. We found that when we left the fry alone (out of laziness), they would disappear after a few days. Then, a couple months later, we'd suddenly see a new, larger BC in the tank; they'd often show back up in the 1/2-3/4" range.

Then yes, it sounds like your male is carrying eggs right now. As mentioned, if he's not eating, that's another major sign. If it's the first time through, don't be surprised if he spits them out too soon, as that's pretty common.

As a side note, it sounds like you have more than two in your tank. Long term that's a recipe for disaster; by disaster, I mean that you will most likely end up with two down the road, as they kill each other off. This gets to be more of an issue once they start breeding.

Wow!! Great responses!! Thanks guys! Yeah, the fish in my overflow looks to be a fully colored up fish.. Judy small... 1/2 inch

Yeah, from the moment their released, they have that pattern (sometimes, before they're released, you can see them dart out and back from dad's mouth, and they have it then as well). Most of them have plain black stripes at this point, and the white dots develop later.

congrats ! check the breeders column on this site there is plenty of info. I am raising mine now for the first time and have learned alot from that column.

Many of our BC ended up in the Bellevue Pet Center (RIP) when we were letting them grow up in our tank (noticed you location).
