My bluespotted jawfish died...

ok every one i have a mystery for you. yesterday (1/14) at about 3pm i purchased a bluespotted jawfish which cost me $95 not bad being they usually are more. i came home with him very happy and started to acclimate using the drip method. at this point my parameters were ph: 8.3 am: 0 nitrate: <5. i acclimated for about 40mins of slowly adding water and draining and repeating. then placed him in the tank and he began to build. i was very satisfyed and excited about my new fish. This moring (1/15) i woke up and he seemed alrite not as busy as the night before but still some what active. soon after i noticed his jaw looked a little swollen and i was like huh but then thought it my have been agitated by an increase in moving rocks and building with him trying to establish a quick home. i tried to feed him a little and we would perk up but not go for it, i figured he was still adjusting and wasnt too worried. around 6pm i noticed him breathing pretty heavily and was concerned so continued to watch. at about 9pm i was geting ready to go to the store and noticed that he was out and on the other side of the tank laying on the sand kind of swimming alittle but mostly being pushed around by the current. so i continued to watch think to my self that this didnt look good. he then shot towards the top multiple time like he was trying to leap i guess. he slowly floated to the sand and just layed there. i scooped him out with a net (obviously he didnt fight) in to a dish only to have him die minutes later (luckly he is still gaurnteed). when i purachsed him he appeared very healthy and the only slight thing wrong with him was his tail fin was a little damaged but i figured nothing to be concerned with be that good feeding and care can grow a tail fin and a happy fish. although i am newer to salt water i am experienced with freshwater and extensive fish care, knowing the benifits of good water quailty and testing being that i currently have a fat, healthy fw stingray. what could have killed my poor little buddy?? i did test the water right after i scooped him and the params were the same. also i have healthy zo's and peppermint shrimps that had been in there for about a week prior to me even getting him giving me no worries or problems and he was my first fish (1 of 4 going in my 29gal) so there was no aggression. any input, tips, questions, or suggestions would be greatly appreacited. i already miss my friend.:( thanks you everyone.

HI Elliott,

I think you posted a thread about him in a fish forum, no?

Sorry for your loss.

How about ammonia and oxygen?

A probelm could be stress or acclimation. or some underlying condition that he had.

Did you test the LFS water before adding your own acclimation water? They could have been very differnt and it could have shocked then stressed the little guy.

How long has your tank been running?

Gosh, that does sound strange. The swollen jaw has got me wondering? Could you have something in the tank that maybe bit him or stung him? A big bristleworm or something along those lines.
No matter what the dealers water was...you followed the proper aclimation process, so I think you can eliminate that as the problem. Plus he wouldn't have started to build his burrow if he was having problems adjusting.
They are the neatest little fish ever I think and quite expensive to boot ( here about 179.00) Anyway good luck with your next one. Hopefully you'll try another. Many times we lose a fish and never ever figure out what really happened.
