Well I finaly got arround to finishing the web page on my DIY carbon / Phosban canister. It's a pretty inexpensive and easy project that I think others will benifit from. Here is the page: http://www.myreef.distantrealm.com/canister.asp

And just to give you an idea, here is the semi-finished project. I still need to take a picture of it running, but that should happen tonight.

Do you see any problems with channeling since your outlet is only half inch as opposed to something that covers the entire top of the container?

When it is used with low flow <100gph the 1/2" outlet should not pose any problem. There may be a small ammount of channeling but I've not seen it. I only put in a small ammount on media and leave plenty of room above to allow the flow to be difused so it hasn't been an issue. I've had on of these running several months now and it works quite well.

Any photos of this thing working yet? I have been thinking about trying this. Anymodifications that you would suggest or just go as stated?

My concern would be the metal on the clamp. Seems to be really cheap, probably won't last long in proximity to the salt water.

I used to use a 20oz soda bottle (you could use a 2 liter as well for more capacty). If you invert it, it has a nice taper to neck that allows you to get rid of the distribution plate and sponge. The threading can be plugged right in to 3/4" garden hose threading if I remember correctly. And then you can just cut a hole in the top on the side for a 1/2" bulkhead for the outlet. When you want to change media, just remove the bottle, and it all comes out the bottom, and then you just use a funnel to put new stuff in.

Here it is running, I've been using this one for about 8 months, Currently It is just running carbon but this should give you an idea of just how it works. The Bio balls you can see at the top are just in the excess space so that I can have a few ready in case I need to set up a quick Q tank. As for the metal, it is clear coated crome. And this one has run over my sump for 8mos and no sign of corrosion yet. I understand that at some point it will happen but for the price It's well worth the effort.

That is very cool. I think I'm going to make a trip to our local "Container Store" and see what they have!

Ive been using these containers for a long time with no problems! Although if you fill the top lid with sillicone it will never leak

Ill make pics of it. Theres even a way to mount it in the sump so it doesnt even need a pump.

Any pics yet??
