I've got a 75 gallon saltwater aquarium and it's been going for a good 2 years now. I never got around to finishing the tank itself...nor did i get all the fish i wanted
and now it's time to move. I'm going to have to sell the moray zebra eel i have and i'm keeping the other 2 fish and making a 30 gallon tank for my parents house.
When i first got my eel he was a normal eel, straight as an arrow. I'm not sure what happened exactly, and to be honest as much as the eel likes to hide, there's no telling if this happened over night or if it was a gradual process...but my eel's head is crooked. He's always looking down. Normally an eel has his body parallel to the bottom of the tank and he's looking straight ahead....but if my eel has his body parallel to the bottom of the tank...he'd have his face in the sand.
I got very worried about this at first, started keeping a closer eye on him, and when i first noticed it he was hardly eating. I'm talking like a month and then some without food. I went up to the local aquarium shop and talked to them about it...they said that it's not uncommon for eels to go a long time without eating sometimes...i only feed him once or twice a week...but going that long without it still bothered me. Either way he's started eating again, altho it's very painful to watch him eat. He can't dart out and grab the food anymore like he used to...he has a hard time finding it because he can't look straight ahead that well and swim at the same time. But he IS eating.
Watching him swim is a bit painful too...he can't swim straight forward anymore, but now it's usually in an upward angle (again..so he can see forward).
Anyone have any clue what's going on here? I've had 2 goby's go missing (they didn't jump out but they're not in the tank anymore) and i figured they probably died and just got nipped at until they were gone. I've also had the idea in my head that perhaps this is a Goby skeleton stuck in the eel's throat...and when I presented that as a possibility to the aquarium guys here they said it could be, but not to worry because it would eventually just decompose and the eel would be fine.
Anyone have any ideas on this? Seen anything like this before? I guess I could just be blessed with an eel that has a disability...it's not uncommon for aquarium life to have deformities so i suppose that's a possibility. Either way I wouldn't feel right selling an eel to someone that has some type of treatable disease...however selling a retarded eel just might get me a sympathy buy.
I'll try and get some pictures posted if no one has any answers off the bat. and thanks in advance!
