My First Shrooms...

KillerReef

Wrasse-a-holic
in about 7 years. I'm adding my first corals to my refurbished tank this Friday. I got some shrooms from Reeftopia I got 2 of the Single Orange Ricordia Polyps, Large and 2 of the Caribbean Corallimorph.

First, I've read a bunch of threads on how to acclimate them and nobody seems to agree. I'm hoping to get a general consensus from the experts in this forum on how you do it. Do I need to dip them? If so, in what?

Also, my lighting is 2 175w 20k MH in a 21" deep tank with 1-2" of sandbed. Should I acclimate them to my lighting? If so, how do you guys do it?

TIA,
Dave

Best acclimated with peanut butter or in tea. Having not had them in 7 years you should be in for a wild trip.

Seriously though, I would say most corals prefer a good solid 45 hour drip acclimation. I wouldn't necessarily dip a shroom, especially if you are getting it from a reputable place (I am a happy customer of Reeftopia)

Shrooms can spit their guts out and look mega unhappy, but I would say they can also be pretty hardy. I would try not to touch it much and make sure to float it in its water in your tank water to temperature acclimate it first.

:-)

good luck

Cool, thanks for the quick reply...

i also plan to use the rubble in a jar trick to get it to attach. what do you feed?

Also, glad to hear you are happy with Reeftopia. My first order from them, and probably not my last. Their price on the Black Cap Basslet was/is awesome...

I feed lightly after a battle with Nitrates- I do a cube of mysis (preferably the brine spirulina mysis mix) once or twice a week and a pinch of flakes just about every day.

I bought more snails and crabs than I needed (here was my logic, I have bought 10 or 15 snails at the LFS before and it never seems to be enough.... Soooo I bought like 100 snails and crabs) and I would say 95% survival rate with excellent packaging.

My tank is 60 gal with 2 175W 10k MH supp with 2 110 VHO. I have a crappy mini-G ASM skimmer and a Mag 7 return. I have a chiller, but not hooked up. I also have a HoB Refugium which helped me conquer my nitrates. So other than the super fancy skimmer my tank is a bit like yours!

Nothing super fancy about it. Yes, it rocks, especially for the price, but it's not a Euro Reef or something "super fancy" like that.
BTW, thank you for the reply...

Did you change your lighting schedule for them? What is your lighting schedule anyways? And what other "livestock" do you have in your tank? Thanks, Dave
