My LED Rope Moonlight

Just rigged this up for $11.99 (from Target in the Christmas light section). The ropelight isn't too bright since I have it high up. Anyone know how much light is too much for moonlights?

Minh you just went on a night dive right? How bright does the moon shine underwater?

"Moon" lights on a tank are for us. I've dove at night in the clearest water there is and by the time you're 20 feet deep there's not much natural light left at all. With a full moon in clear water you'd have some light to 10-20 feet deep, but otherwise, you can't see 5 feet in front of you.

Yes! I've been telling people to use these for years now. They charge so much for a single LED it's outrageous.

You can put them on a dimmer switch without affecting the bulb life.

Xia,

I have only done one night dive, so my observation may not be valid. It wasn't the brightest night - but there was definitely enough light for use to see each other on the boat and put on our gears without any additional light. We started with our lights turned on. When I covered my lights - it was pitch dark. It's hard for me to say whether it was "pitch dark" because my eyes were used to the dive lights or if it was because it was really pitched dark.

If I had to take a guess, I would probably agree with WarrenG. When diving, I noticed a significant loss of light when you go down. It is hard for me to phantom that any significant moonlight would penetrate down any significant level. I would be comfortable to say that the moonlights I have seen on our fish tank are way brighter than any light from the moonlight. With that said - I still like having a moonlight on my tank. :D

I know other people (Rich and Jeni) have done night dive. Like to hear their opinion.

Agree, they are used for nighttime viewing so as not to have to turn on the main lights to disrupt the inhabitants of the tank.....in fact I notice when leaving them on the cleaner shrimp still hide, polyp extension is not as big, and ampipods hide more.....I want those suckers to work while I sleep and get it all cleaned up!!!!

Looks like it would be really bright. Hopefully not enough to disturb the photosynthesis too bad. Worse case scenario if they are too bright, a very ez fix would just spaciously wrap it with elctrical tape. Neat idea xia, how do you like it?

I have 5 Led's basically put together on wire loop to a radioshack plug that gives off i think like 17 volts or so.

Plenty of light, and if I need more I have some mini attinics I light up for just a bit more brightness, then for full spectrum I use the halide.

I'd love to figure out how to DIY LED's after reading the full review of them I'm so ready to have em. Just think 10+ years without so much as a fan running in the hood.

Funman1 AKA Steve is great at electronics. He did an awesome Led mod to an xbox. He may be able to give you some advice.
