My new baby Maxima

Sweet clam, and super sweet contraption. I keep mine in a tupperware in the bottom and that is pretty ugly compared to that.

IMO - it is unlikely that a snail killed your other clam. Usually, snails, shrimp, starfish, etc. will leave them alone until they start to die. If they sense that they are dying, then they will hustle over to finish them off.

Be sure and feed that guy 4-5 times a week with phyto.

I can assure you that whelks will eat clams. I just didn't know that was a problem at first. The last clam was given to me by a friend in Alabama, and he knew I'd take good care of it. I was crushed to find it dead the next morning. The fact that 4 of them were all over it left no doubt in my mind. I did quick research afterwards and found out these snails are known to eat clams, and I felt really badly.

The guy that shipped me his gold Maxima was pretty upset and wished he'd never sent it to in the first place after that.

So now I'm being extra careful. And with good reason.

Observation from someone who doesn't own a clam yet (too scared) but wants one in the future.....

They look like nassarius. How can you tell the difference?

Love the baby clam bassinet! I might have to get my hubby to make me one of those when I get the guts to try it....I'm so afraid of killing things...

I had to make a similar contraption to keep my Koran angel from eating my 2 baby Maximas. I bought a small "Betta breeder", and glued the suction cup bracket from a Maxi-jet to the back. I stuck it to the tank glass, and they stay safe and happy :) To feed them, I put the whole breeder into a tupperware container with DT's for an hour.

Here is the difference between a whelk and a nassarius.

I posted the differences in this post:

Nice clam and holder....

Those snails look like tulip snails...... Predatory. How'd you end up with so many?

Also, you might want to put a rock or something buried in the sand under the clam for it to attach to. That way it won't burrow through the sand and attach to the acrylic. It will make it easier for final placement after it outgrows the box.

I ended up with all those whelks (or tulip snails perhaps.. I'll double check) because they were breeding in my tank for over a year and a half and never caused any trouble.

The clam was attached to the display tank at the LFS two times, but was removeable, so I'm expecting that I'll be able to get it out of the little tray when I feel the tank is finally safe. I might add a small rock... nice idea.
